Opinion by Liz Cheney
May 5, 2021 at 3:05 p.m. MDT
Liz Cheney, a Republican, represents Wyomings at-large congressional district in the U.S. House.
The Republican Party is at a turning point, and Republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the Constitution. In the immediate wake of the violence of Jan. 6, almost all of us knew the gravity and the cause of what had just happened we had witnessed it firsthand.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) left no doubt in his public remarks. On the floor of the House on Jan. 13, McCarthy said: The president bears responsibility for Wednesdays attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. Now, McCarthy has changed his story.
I am a conservative Republican, and the most conservative of conservative values is reverence for the rule of law. Each of us swears an oath before God to uphold our Constitution. The electoral college has spoken. More than 60 state and federal courts, including multiple Trump-appointed judges, have rejected the former presidents arguments, and refused to overturn election results. That is the rule of law; that is our constitutional system for resolving claims of election fraud.
The question before us now is whether we will join Trumps crusade to delegitimize and undo the legal outcome of the 2020 election, with all the consequences that might have. I have worked overseas in nations where changes in leadership come only with violence, where democracy takes hold only until the next violent upheaval. America is exceptional because our constitutional system guards against that. At the heart of our republic is a commitment to the peaceful transfer of power among political rivals in accordance with law. President Ronald Reagan described this as our American miracle.

(5,106 posts)Funny how Dubya actually gives off a warm vibe these days to those of us who used to truly distain him. He was thoughtless and far from a Rhodes Scholar, but we didn't yet know how a vicious and thoroughly immoral man could be elected to that office. I even think better of Nixon after the experience of Trump. There's also the fact that Trump is NUTS! Surely there are Republicans besides Liz and Mitt who are bothered by this obvious fact.

(31,828 posts)These comments show her TRUE colors.
I hope they throw her away.
Not my animals, not my farm.
There is much at stake now, including the ridiculous wokeness of our political rivals, the irrational policies at the border and runaway spending that threatens a return to the catastrophic inflation of the 1970s. Reagan formed a broad coalition from across the political spectrum to return America to sanity, and we need to do the same now. We know how. But this will not happen if Republicans choose to abandon the rule of law and join Trumps crusade to undermine the foundation of our democracy and reverse the legal outcome of the last election.

(7,432 posts)Liz might be correct in her assessment of the attempted insurrection and of the Big Lie, but she's in La La Land when she says that Reagan returned the nation to sanity. The nation wasn't "insane" when Carter was president. We know what a nation "insane" looks like, and it's still expressing insanity from the Trump years. Liz's invoking of Reagan as some kind of god-hero is myth-making gibberish.

(13,920 posts)The trump era push towards fascism is still strong, but its faltering a bit.
The Cheney who thought trumps brand of fascism would win the day voted against his impeachment in 2019
The Cheney who saw him lose an election despite all the cheating in his favor voted for his second impeachment.
The Cheney who sees this brand of fascism likely to fail in the long run is trying to create a bunker of "not a real conservative" for her fellows to retreat too if things continue to go wrong for them.
She is no friend of liberty or democracy.

(37,160 posts)What are you going to do when most of your party does not stand up for the law, does not do as you suggest, is fine embracing Trump's statement and acting as if they were fact?
You're at the nightmare scenario for those of your ideological persuasion: The only way to save your party is make the extremist whither from lack of success. You have to torpedo it. And the way to do that is to break any chance they have of majority, break with them, and, while not joining us, going along with us. There's going to be a whole lot that you don't like, but we're not a nightmare. They are. And what we do is stuff you can live with.
But if you try to play all sides and do nothing, all the destruction to your party and the rule of law you're worried about will come true.

But ridding our government of those who would supplant our democracy is a noble cause regardless of your politics.
You don't have to love Liz, like Liz, trust Liz or agree with Liz. You only have to align with her on this one issue, which happens to be the most critical battle we are currently facing.

(7,403 posts)Where he said he no longer has confidence in Liz Cheney in the number 3 spot for House Republicans. It was gutless and has been forcefully rebuked by Liz Cheney. (81,304 posts)I can't believe I find ANYTHING on whick to agree - with LIZ CHENEY, of all people.
This is about as far as I go. She's so radically anti-choice, that alone is a deal-breaker all by itself.
All I need to know, from any politician, is where they stand on a woman's right to choose, govern, and have the last word over, her own body. If they're wrong on that, we go no further. I will have heard all I need to hear. And there's no reason to go any further.
For me, it starts and ends with a woman's right to unassailable jurisdiction over her own body. That issue, for me, overrides EVERYTHING else.
