Anti-Olympic petition gains tens of thousands of signatures

Anti-Olympic petition gains tens of thousands of signatures.

The petition calling the Tokyo Olympics to be canceled registered about 50,000 signatures in the first 24 hours after being launched.

The petition is addressed to International Olympic President Thomas Bach, who has tentative plans to visit Japan later this month. He is expected to meet the Olympic torch relay on May 17 in Hiroshima, and perhaps also travel to Tokyo where small anti-Olympic are protests being planned.

Although 70 to 80% of Japanese citizens in polls say they want the Olympics canceled or postponed, there is no indication this will happen. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Tokyo organizing committee President Seiko Hashimoto, and Bach have repeatedly said the games will go on as scheduled.

Japanese culture has always been big on honor and commitment. To cancel the Olympics might be considered defeat by some.

This is the culture that gave us seppuku, after all.

If so, their idea of "honor" is different from the one I grew up with, because there is nothing "honorable" about a leader who forges ahead with a plan that a huge majority of their constituents are dead set against, endangering young athletes from all across the globe as well.

Greed, I'm guessing.

Not too sure about Japan's new leader, but isn't he rather right wing?

All vaccines have to be imported, that’s one major problem. The system to sign up to get a vaccine is also pretty darn awful.
