A group of Democratic Senators, including Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), have introduced a bill that would block Louis DeJoys ten-year plan for the USPS.
Senators Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) will introduce the bill to block DeJoys plan when the Senate comes back into session.
The U.S. Postal Service needs to be improving delivery rates not walking them back to the days of the pony express, said Heinrich in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA. After I, and several Members of Congress, fought to save the USPS during the COVID-19 pandemic, I expect more of a willingness from Postmaster General DeJoy to improve one of the longest-standing services in America. If not, he needs to go. Ill be fighting to strengthen the USPS in the meantime.
Manchin added, For rural communities across the country our U.S. Postal Service provides an irreplaceable service. West Virginians depend on USPS to deliver medicines and bills or support their small
businesses. The delays in service over the course of the last year have had serious impacts on rural communities, and its a travesty that the Postmaster General wants to double down on that poor service by making it the standard going forward. We should be striving for excellence, not codifying mediocrity. The DeJoy Act would ensure West Virginians can rely on USPS again by requiring delivery standards for first-class mail to be met. I join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join me to ensure USPS is delivering on time again.
Senate Democrats understand the urgency of the situation and are not going to wait for USPS to get its new Biden chosen members situated and then get around to firing DeJoy.
The Postmaster General does not have unilateral power. While Congress or the President cant fire him, they can strip away his power to continue to destroy the Postal Service.
DeJoy will likely be removed, but until he is, Senate Democrats are willing to act to save the USPS.

(45,806 posts)deemed to be untouchable, why can't the Potus or our Congress create a position that is above DeJoy & in complete control of the USPS. Thst person can then assign responsibilities to his subordinates (DeJoy being one of them) to iomprove USPS operations. If DeJoy doesn't like his assignments, he can quit!

(67,782 posts)...in 2016 (3 Democrats, 2 republicans), but their appointment was blocked by a single Senator. As a result, when trump took office there were no Governors and all members of the Board of Governors were appointed by trump.

(3,057 posts)They decide if he stays or goes...and right now the Trump appointees are keeping him in. Joe has just nominated 3, but the other 6 are all Trump appointees. Whether they're Trump loyalist remains to be seen. These aren't people who have to answer to the knuckle dragging, screaming hoards, so it's possible they still possess vertebrae. Two of them are actually Democrats, so if these nominations go through, Democrats will have enough votes on the Board to dump DeJoy.

(7,694 posts)in Colorado Springs. It was shipped last Friday from there. Then i see it has arrived on Tues May 4 early afternoon to Glendale Heights, IL. It leaves there early in the morning on Wednesday May 5 and arrived in Las Vegas, NV at 10 am same day. Now I see it has left there today at noon.
How fucked up is this shipping routing ?!?!??

(1,096 posts)I chose to continue to use the Post Office. I can no longer do that. Late fees and interest are just too much to pay for late payment fees. DeJoy needs to be gone a long time ago.

(51,628 posts)and other bills not received I told the companies that this must be due to USPS under DeJoy. None of them responded with "Yes, that is happening to a lot of people" as I had expected. Fortunately no one charged me a late fee. Since I ALWAYS pay my bills on time via USPS their computers could see I am not lying and being a loser.
I also never received my $600 second recovery payment (sent on Jan 6th!!!). When I called the IRS for the 3rd time it was suggested to just have it taken out or refunded with my fed taxes. What a pain in the ass. They also told me that everything from the IRS is very slow so expect a long delay in the IRS (on top of the USPS delay). What a mess...thanks to the fucking moron!

(309 posts)I needed a new debit card as I lost or misplaced mine in march. My bank said 5 to 10 days. Never got it. Never got my credit card bill, electric bill etc. Mail delivery is sporadic sometimes comes at 9:00 am then other times at 4:30 pm. I'm not the only one complaining. Also myself and other neighbors have gotten mail that belonged to someone else! I just can't trust the mail anymore. Sad.

(51,628 posts)that my mom sent an expensive birthday gift card to my niece and apparently she never got it but someone did. They called and pretended to be someone my niece knew and was in trouble and needed over $1,000 right away. The police were even called and it is someone in their local post office that somehow got it as well as names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. The police never contacted either my mom or sister as follow up. This must happen all the time. I am sure my second $600 from the economic stimulus payment in card form was stolen by someone. Tax time should be tons of fun for the IRS and USPS (both equally screwed up at this time).

Who is not going to be supportive of an efficient Post Office? Its obvious DeJoy was purposely screwing things up to help Trump depress the mail-in ballots.
Firing him and putting the PO on a firm basis is a double win.

(6,569 posts)I think that the intent is to get him out as rapidly as possible. It was very clear that this guy is a danger to the USPS. He is a Trumpian nightmare put in there to aid Trump, and now that Trump is gone, he still thinks he will be allowed to stay. I think not.
The speech he made to (I forget who it was) would seem to indicate that he knows his time is coming to an end. These Trump rats are dedicated to staying in and fighting, in hopes of Trump returning. We will not allow that. And, neither will Joe or Kamala. I really, really think that they will get him out as rapidly as legally possible, without fighting, for example, with the Minority Leader. There are a lot of people dependent on the postal service, and it is very clear that this service is necessary to everybody.
Let's clear the books of having to fund unborn employee's pension plans, to start. It would help. But, it's just another, endless fight with the fascist GOP.

(13,921 posts)But last I heard Joe had not advocated for his replacement. And the full current board supports dejoy, and outnumber Bidens new people.
Seems hes going to have to clear some more room on the board if he actually wants to replace dejoy and reverse the destruction of the USPS

What does he want for his state? Say yes to S1 and you get everything-and-then-some, Senator.

(13,921 posts)Already pretty dang messed up.
Stopping further demolition is needed. But the whole thing needs major repair/restoration at this point. Mail that used to flow smoothly is now nearly as slow as UPS and as glitchy as Fed-ex. Improvement is a nice goal.. bur first restoration to where it was before that criminal got started on it.
Id like to hear the specifics of removing Dejoy. Intent and a plan from the president. Its already taken longer than it should. this is important.
EndlessWire
(6,569 posts)DeJoy's conflict of interest plus the desire to please Trump and aid his effort in the election has degraded the service to the point that the private sector has outpaced them.
I think the plan is to hire these three extra members and then outnumber the Board members who favor Trump appointments. They can then easily tell DeJoy to take a hike. And, they can take control of the postal service and fix what he broke.
DeJoy can't stop Biden's nominations. I am not sure who can. Maybe someone. But, right now I think we are on track to kick DeJoy's ass to the curb. Patience to the People!

(13,921 posts)And we need the post office. the post office is important, and if used properly could be one of the strongest options in our toolchest to help this country thrive.
Its no accident the right has been targeting the USPS for ages. And its no accident that they sent someone with a conflict of interest to destroy it from the inside.
As for the board.. If memory serves, there are 6 current members, and Biden has three new inbound. Its also my understanding that all 6 of the current members, including the "democrats" recently voted to support Dejoy. 6 vs 3 is not math thats in our favor, even once Bidens picks are in place.
Additionally, and I could be wrong about this, but I dont believe Biden has ever clearly stated he wants dejoy gone.
I'd like to see the current board members who supported the intentional failure that Dejoy is causing removed. I understand that they can only be removed for cause. 4 years ago, the mail ran on time or faster, reliably. Now.. it does not. Thats not a track record of success, nor something that can be tolerated long. Everyone is noticing the USPS is not functioning, and that noticing will soon turn people sour on the whole thing if its not soon fixed. Much more patience.. and we will lose.

(13,921 posts)DeJoy started June 16 2020. Hes been in less than a year, and has already done significant, possibly permanent damage to the postal service and its reputation. With nothing left to lose, what would he do with another two and a half years?
And If i follow the details correctly, every single member of the current board was put there by Trump.
The chairman's term apparently expired December 2020. And recently voted to support Dejoy. And for some reason is still there. (edit to add.. they can stay on a year past their term, or until a replacement is appointed. But as far as I can tell, no replacement has even been nominated)
But even if he were replaced tomorrow, thats still 7-4 favoring Dejoy, and the president not on record asking for him to be removed.
the next "governor" has a term expiring December 2021. a year and a half to get us to 6-5 favoring Dejoy.
two more in December 2022. This would be the soonest that dejoy would have to worry about being removed, given "patience". Two and a half years.
By then Dejoy will have been in place long enough to interfere in another election. Will we still have a majority in the house or senate after another round of this? Will the republicans allow President Biden to put another pair of governors in place?

(10,303 posts)Yeah, crazy idea. I don't know if the Defense Production Act can be used for a service, but instead of having Amazon, FedEx and UPS drop their packages to the USPS for "last mile" delivery, draft them in for the solution. Oh, and fire DeJoy.
