There are subtle clues spread over the time period, not the least of which being how easy Azar went on him, the way he seemed to be trying to entrap wealthy and powerful people, his multiple passports, and just generally how easily he, for the most part, got away with it all for a pretty damn long time. Then he did the dutiful thing when caught and killed himself.

I dunno ... I don't think it's entirely crazy to wonder.

I'd add that I think if he was, he was acting with at least tacit approval of the US intel services.

But people didn't know back then. Shit was all kept hidden. He got an 18-month term in the cushiest jail and got to work from his own office every day.

I think it was a charge of solicitation of someone under 18, and he probably told everyone he didn't know she was underage, but still got in trouble for it, etc.

Public didn't know that much about it until many years later.

Clinton's association, and fueled all of the bizarre conspiracy theories eventually leading right up to pizzagate, bizarre blood soup dinners and on and on. I have wondered from time to time, if the adventures with "Epstein Express" stories, fueled the origination of Qanon et al. I can't say for sure, but I remember by the time of the 2016 election, these stories baked in with extremists.

Cable news or major papers may not have been covering it. but it sure was an explosion of stories on line.

I am trying to figure out if there's a reasonable chance that, at that time, he was in the dark re: the severity of what Epstein was doing.

And I agree with you. I can't remember how often I experienced the pain from a sort of deep betrayal of trust and faith with a number of public figures with whom I presumed to possess a modicum level of principled standards.

It's hard to accept, and actually we don't really know the facts, but I sort of don't want to know anymore, because for me it's just too disheartening. I did battle against what I believed to be false claims, wild CT nut jobs posting all manner of really bizarre (to me) stories that just couldn't be remotely true. And then a story like this comes up, seemingly to verify those nut jobs stories.

I say "seemingly" on purpose, it will be considered as confirmation/verification by Qanon et al despite any evidence contrary to their CT beliefs.

I think it's also kindof annoying that in the article it says:

Where 'widely reported' is a link to a 2019 DB article ... one which says nothing to confirm that any such thing was widely reported in 2011.

Nothing about 'as young as 14' was part of the charges, as you asserted above.

Look I'm in no way defending Epstein, only trying to figure out why Gates would've agreed to have anything to do with him.

My assumption is that since the 2018 Herald article and subsequent explosion of the story, we all know a lot more now than people knew from 2011-2013.

Had the charges made it publicly known that he solicited someone as young as 14 ... back in 2008? I think a LOT of things would've gone very differently from 2008-2018 for Epstein. And Gates would've steered very clear. At least I damn sure hope so.
