The families of 16 children in Johnson County are suing the Blue Valley and Olathe districts, arguing that their students should be allowed to attend school during the pandemic without wearing masks.
Attorney Linus Baker said the parents he is representing challenged their districts mask requirements under Senate Bill 40, which empowers parents to quickly fight such COVID-19 restrictions. But the Olathe and Blue Valley school boards have so far upheld their mask mandates.
The lawsuit, which began in Johnson County district court, was moved to federal court this week.

His petition of more than 1,200 pages, filed earlier this week, argues that the students should be granted individual exemptions to the districts mask mandates. The parents contend that masks are interfering with their childrens ability to learn.

Gawd. If they get the one in a million RW moronic ideologue as a judge that fails to dismiss this out-of-hand, I will absolutely lose it.

(82,849 posts)Are you sure your kid is wearing the mask right? They're not supposed to be stuffing masks in their ears; you know that, right?

(34,112 posts)I know they are everywhere but we do seem to have more than our share here these days.
One success story, I got my brother to take his first Moderna vaccine, he has been wearing a mask for a while now, that too took some doing. I had to find the place, fill out the paper work and did everything but drive him there but he finally did it! This is the guy who when he came back here from Texas 12 years ago practically beat me up for being a liberal. He LOVED Bill O'Reilly, considered him a part of our family because he had been on TV for so long (crazy). He was so far gone that he would slam his fists down in a restaurant and scream "PAPERS" and laugh, no more trips with him to eat after that. So...with a lot of patience and a lot of time away from him I have been able to bring him slowly along. He told me he thought Biden was doing a good job, is still skeptical but encouraged. He felt the same way about Trump and probably voted for him but this was a huge admit for him. Anyway, one more down for humanity here.

(412 posts)I say fine but they have to sign a waiver saying they cannot sue the school district if their precious young ones end up with Covid. And also they pay for additional insurance on their kids if they spread Covid to other students.

(142 posts)around here like it is no big deal. These parents are the ones who make it a big deal. Kids will learn what to think of mask wearing from their parents. Most kids aren't bothered by mask wearing because their parents wear them and don't fret about it.

(65,101 posts)At the beginning of the year freshman knew what incoming frosh know. Now they know what somebody's who's been in school for that year learns.
Same with 6th graders who are now ready for 7th grade.
In 10 different schools.
My more than merely anecdotal dataset (several hundred kids) of schools doing in-person schooling (with mask enforcement) says this "interfering with learning" thing is absolute BS.
