this solar array just went up in the park lot of the kaimuki drygoods building, with a matching amount of solar on the roof of the building (not in photo). probably millions of square feet of asphalt and commercial building roof that could be covered in a similar fashion.

(32,668 posts)So much space is squandered in my state (Pennsylvania) and other states that I've visited. Hawaii has no space it can afford to waste, it's all precious and the people of Hawaii understand the importance of renewable energy.

(11,594 posts)Unfortunately, for us little guys it is a racket. We have had multiple companies give us a bid and we are looking at over $40,000 to have solar installed (would still not make us energy independent, but maybe 60-70%) or we could lease it. Everyone tries to push the tax rebate we would get to make it more affordable but we don't qualify for that.
Meanwhile, energy costs keep increasing and we have full sun on our roof just waiting to help. If any place should change its ways it is here. We import fossil fuels here (via ships) at a high cost.
