Montana governor signs law prohibiting transgender athletes from playing in sports in line with

their gender identity

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte has signed HB112 into law, an anti-trans bill that requires athletes to compete in sports based on their biological sex.

The bill, which was approved by the GOP-controlled legislature in April, follows suit with over 20 states that have introduced similar bans. Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, West Virginia and Arkansas have also signed those bills into law as well.

Last month, President Joe Biden signed an executive order banning discrimination based on gender.

Montana's bill included an amendment which would void the law if the federal government decided to withhold education funding based on the discriminatory nature of HB112, and if Montana's appeal failed.
