take less vacation,
work longer days,
and retire later
but at least we're not stuck
with socialized health care,
like our happier
and more well-off
capitalist allies.

(19,970 posts)Here in Ireland, for a reasonably decent plan (for 2 adults, 1 child), we would pay the equivalent of $3600 a year. We would pay it but it is paid by my wife's employer, a US Pharma company. For prescriptions, the most any family would pay a month would be about $150, although if a person was on a long term illness like Diabetes, IBS etc, all prescription medicine is free.

(19,204 posts)For a family of 3? You'd be getting off cheaply at that price. My brother (a staunch tRump supporter) had to pay $2,300 a month for himself when he was between jobs a few years ago. I think he's still waiting for the "much cheaper, much better" republican healthcare plan, which will be coming out any day now.
My brother and I don't talk much anymore, and that's just fine with me.

(23,337 posts)If he was between jobs, COBRA plans are soooo expensive. We're self employed and thus self insured which is like swimming with sharks. I've got a RWNJ sibling that I haven't talked to since 2011. I'm good with that decision.

(19,204 posts)He was on COBRA. He's an extremely talented computer programmer, so he wasn't out of work very long. I think he just wanted some time off between jobs, so it was only for six months. Still, that's a lot of money to pay for one person's healthcare. If it wasn't for Medicare and my Advantage plan I'd be better off dead, because I wouldn't be able to pay premiums like that for too long!

(22,048 posts)...is that so many WORKERS consistently vote for politicians who do not give a damn about the WORKERS' well-being.
The ocean of stupidity in the United States is vast and deep.
