No credit is due to the former guy. He was just grifting, which is just who he is and what he does. I credit the base with killing off.conservatism. They finally rose up and expressed their semi dormant authoritarianism. The former guy is a symptom and without the pathogical base he would be nothing but a bankrupt former reality TV star.

That pathological base will persist without the former guy.

They both need each other and are willing to tolerate each other to maintain power. Hopefully, one day an efficient wedge issue will separate the two and the divorce will be nasty. I would have thought that the insurrection at the Capitol would have been the wedge. If they continue their unholy matrimony they will destroy the nation in the name of patriotism.

If we allow ourselves to be drawn into that dark world, the fathers of the new state won't be the Gatez, Greenes and Trumps, but the McConnells of the party, the ones who know better but can't resist.

they might accept someone else in his place as a new Dear Leader but former guy would have to be dead and we would have to wait an undetermined amount of time for them to figure out he is not going to rise again.

Hawley, Cruz, the rest of the christofascist cool kids are itching for former guy to die politically or for real so they can try to step in.

It's probably why our country has survived for so long, we usually had some balancing forces between conservative and liberal ideologies. Since Reagan, especially, the liberal balancing force has been beaten down and the country has been drifting farther and farther into a fascist dystopia run by oligarchs and strongmen.

We're long overdue for a lurch to the left, so to speak. The Biden admin is striving for it, but the RWers are fighting back, trying to hold on to their minority rule across the country.
