If Tr*mp is allowed to run in 2024 our system has broken down

It's high time we took Jefferson's advice to re visit the Constitution for some updating.

The question Whether one generation of men has a right to bind another, seems never to have been started either on this or our side of the water… (But) between society and society, or generation and generation there is no municipal obligation, no umpire but the law of nature. We seem not to have perceived that, by the law of nature, one generation is to another as one independant nation to another… On similar ground it may be proved that no society can make a perpetual constitution, or even a perpetual law. The earth belongs always to the living generation… Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of 19. years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force and not of right.

with their impeachment vote. Even if he is in prison, he still can run for President. We tried to make the point at the time. It would be tragic to see Trump sworn in while in prison and then immediately pardoning himself. Ridiculous - so was watching the Capital stormed.

We handed the GOP a broom because it was the right thing to do. They refused to grab it.

Personally, I think anyone who wants to run for office should be allowed. That said, I hope to dog voters have better sense than to elect the likes of trump.

I don't believe the Constitution says anything about how parties decide on their candidates. The only qualifications it says are:

Must be at least 35 years old, and have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years, and be a natural born citizen.

Jefferson's thinking everything should be redone every 19 years is a genuinely scary idea.

and like most you have to take the good with the bad. He is idolized far too much, but his contributions should be recognized. I think it is evident that he was not a courageous man. He was a spendthrift. He was a bad administrator in many respects.

On the other hand he had a love for science and had a vision for the country. He was intelligent and a skilled writer. I honestly think he cared for the country and what he was involved in creating.

The fact that he saw nothing wrong with having sex with his slave (or even having slaves for that matter) seems to be a huge moral blind spot even given what was normal at the time. The fact that he tried to conceal that exploitation is proof enough that he knew it was wrong. I still wonder about keeping your own relatives in slavery. What kind of man does that?

...and what he's been convicted of.

But the idea that any prosecutor can disqualify a presidential candidate by filing charges is one that would certainly get a workout if that was how our system functioned.

Fortunately, we don't give them those sorts of powers.

In a democracy, people can vote for whomever the f they want.

I was referring to that part.

Some states do not disenfranchise persons convicted of crimes.

Whether someone in jail can vote depends on the state and what they are convicted of.

Even if he was lawfully disenfranchised, he could still seek office, if he was over 35, ect.

Read about Eugene Debs, he ran for president from prison as a Socialist in 1920, and won something like 4% of the national popular vote.

Whether someone in jail can vote is dependent on the state they are in, and what they are in jail for.

I did not say the state could determine eligibility.

The post to which I was responding said “He just couldn’t vote.”

Or just certain ones?

If we are going to put appointed officials in charge of deciding who we can vote for, we're going to have a much bigger problem.

How about a sheriff in Arizona who doesn't think a candidate was born in the US?

You know the one the GOP slept on because it was just meanness to pursue the poor man. There is no chance he will be President again.

Right.

Next time he comes back with Blackwater and kills all those he needs to to ensure he is never impeached.

King for four years. After that he installs whoever he wants.

The only restrictions on running for President

1. Age and citizenship
2. Having been elected to no more than two terms or one term and serving over two years of another President's term.
3. Through the second vote of impeachment being disqualified from holding federal office (this is probably a majority vote but you need 2/3rds for removal first before this vote).

Establish precedent and it's only a matter of time that a candidate you LIKE will be excluded by future powers.

If a politician can win a primary and run in a General then they can run for whatever office they want.
