The economy had actually started slowing down in October 2019, even before the pandemic hit, and outside of a strong services sector report, several different industries had slipped into net job loss territory in the Feb 2020 employment report. If COVID-19 had NOT manifest in March, there were several economic indicators that were pointing to a recession by June. The DJIA was overvalued and part of the reason that the market fell so quickly was that it was already primed to fall, which was then exacerbated as panic set in due to the virus emerging so quickly.

The GQP knows it can't actually run on its record without a huge amount of cherry picking, then reinventing reality after the fact.
