Jeff Bezos is having a $1.2 billion yacht made with a smaller yacht to hold the helicopter to ride alongside. He paid no federal taxes and has made almost double what he made in 2020, pandemic and all. How's that $1400 holding up?

(82,849 posts)Can everyone please get back to work for $7.25 an hour, and can we all agree, with unity and bipartisanship, to lower the tax rate on Mr. Bezos, so we can alleviate his pain somewhat? Won't someone think of wealthy for a change?

Anyway, he needs the yachts to get to his secret volcano island so he can plot his next diabolical...uh, philanthropic uh, something

(182,945 posts)The world's richest man is reportedly buying a boat, though that word feels inappropriately sensible for the monstrosity going to Captain Bezos: a 417-foot superyacht that's so massive it has its own "support yacht" with a helipad, according to Bloomberg. The estimated cost, not including the boat's support boat, is $500 million

That said, it's not likely the boats will be registered in the US, so he'll manage to avoid various taxes, fees, and regulations.
As for the support yacht. . . well, of course he needs a support yacht. Most yacht photos I've seen show helipads on motor yachts. Others might know for sure, but I don't think you would have a helipad on a sail yacht. So, of course he needs a support yacht. And I'll bet the support yacht will on its own make it to the top 10 or 20 in terms of superyacht size.
It's good to be rich.
Think about this. The rule of thumb for annual yacht operating costs of the purchase price for the yachts. So, assuming $1.2 billion for the yachts, that's $120 million per year to run them. Fuel, maintenance, staff, food & water, fees and taxes.
The real shame here is that he could increase salaries and require his contractors to pay living wages, and he wouldn't even feel that in his wallet.
If my calculations are correct - and I've demonstrated my arithmetic shortcomings in the past - the equivalent of his yacht cost as a percentage of his wealth would be equivalent to a person with a net wealth of $100,000 spending $652. Hardly even a drop in the, well, the ocean.

Helicopters - the largest superyachts have 2, so you can host your friend's helicopter as well as your own.
Tenders - some of the larger superyachts have more than one tender, and those tenders can be the size of small yachts.

(1,666 posts)...$60,000 a year or so from interest. That is just a million dollar portfolio.
At some point you are so rich there is no point in keeping it except pure greed. If he set up a portfolio worth 100 Billion Dollars, he could use the interest on a monthly basis to randomly help people. That is a lot of people per month who could get checks of say $500,000 dollars or maybe a full million.
Why be so greedy and horde it all? He would need to be immortal to spend it all.

Hell, they not only don't share any of it with society, they don't pay any taxes and leave us common taxpayers to shoulder the load of taking care of the country's expenses so they can continue their massive pillaging.
