2-Year-Old Boy Shoots Both Parents Luckily, no one was severely injured in Wednesday morning i

A Maine toddler who wandered into his parents' room Wednesday morning ended up accidentally shooting them and injuring himself, cops say, but luckily, all three are expected to recover.

The 2-year-old boy apparently spotted a gun, which was loaded, on one of the nightstands in the family's home in West Bath, picked it up, and fired it once, Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry tells WGME. That one shot did some real damage, though: The little boy's mother was hit in the leg, the dad was shot in the back of the head, and the 2-year-old himself was hurt in the face when the gun recoiled, Merry says, per WMTW.

The three were rushed to a local hospital, where they were found to have non-life-threatening injuries. The couple has another child, a 3-week-old who was also in the room but not hurt, and the baby is now being cared for by the grandmother, who lives with the family.

"How the boy was able to pick up and fire the weapon is of great concern and is being investigated," Merry says. "This situation, while disturbing, could have had an even more tragic ending." The incident has put new focus on the Maine Gun Safety Coalition's push to pass a state law that would criminalize leaving a loaded weapon out that a child subsequently uses, per WGME. An "absolute crisis," is how the group's director described Wednesday's shooting.

I'm glad Sheriff Merry finds this incident to be of great concern and disturbing. But ultimately, whaddyagonnado? Sure, we could pass a law that would criminalize leaving a loaded weapon out in reach of a child, but we all know that children aren't going to follow the law especially if they don't understand it, so what's the point?

mandatory loss of child custody in the event of a negligent discharge with an injury or death in which a child is involved.

Draconian consequences.

And they lose the right to ever own firearms again.

...not enough 2 year olds have guns. The only way to stop this unspeakable violence is to ARM MORE 2 YEAR OLDS!

What's next...assault binkies?

But seriously, these "responsible gun owners" need to be charged with something for leaving a loaded weapon on the nightstand.

I hope they learned a lesson.

My son just told me the other day that someone we know had a gun under his pillow. Somehow it discharged and he was shot in the femur.

I've posted here before about the time I went to bed and discovered my then-husband had his 357 Magnum under MY pillow. We had words. Many words.

I guess I don't understand the level of paranoia that would cause someone to endanger the lives of everyone in their house by doing something so stupid.

Should have a life-long man on ever owning or touching a firearm again. The toddler almost took care of that. But once they get out of the hospital, all their guns spools be taken away and they should be placed on a list blocking them from ever owning a gun

Toddlers Killed More Americans than Terrorists in 2015

Statistics about the numbers of toddlers killed versus terrorism victims depend on the definitions of "toddlers" and "terrorism."

If both of those parents were gone.

This level of murderous negligence is absolutely inexcusable and unacceptable. They obviously love their guns more than they love their own babies.

At minimum they should lose custody and have their parental rights completely severed.
