I helped a public school system a few years ago post ransom ware attack. They paid the ransom. (their cyber insurance did).
I think it was about $10,000. So the Feds didn't really care much.
But $5m? And it impacted national security?
These guys are going to get a midnight visit from Seal Team 6.

(4,448 posts)I would be very surprised if thee NSA doesn't already know exactly who it is.
The hard part is taking action without exposing methods.
This isn't about the money any more. Ransomware attacks occur every day. To date it's not been worthwhile to go after them.
But when you start shutting down regions of the US. That's different.
