(34,060 posts)The guideline change raised a lot of questions, however. Here's a look at some of them.

(205,541 posts)I'm in New York where masks are required to enter any business or store - and I mainly keep my outings to groceries, pharmacy, gas station and the ATM. But if masks are no longer required if you're vaccinated, how can you tell the difference between a vaccinated person and one who is anti-vax? We have them around here too, but till now everyone was required to wear masks. And we heard that Bill Maher's show is canceled tomorrow because he has covid, despite being vaccinated, though he's asymptomatic. I think this is premature.

(202 posts)Yesterday, 630 Americans died from Covid. I guess that is OK with the CDC. The numbers of cases and deaths may have been going down, but the willful misinterpretation of their "surprise" unmasking ruling will mean that those numbers will start to go up again.
All those jerks that we "essential" workers have been dealing with for the past 14 months? If we politely ask them to put on masks, they will claim that the CDC now says they don't have to, assuming they don't just assault us.
I am 2 weeks past my second shot, but 97% is not 100% and, if you are dealing, indoors, with hundreds of people on a daily basis, 40% of whom have not and may never get the vaccination, well, your odds are not so great.
I am so mad at the CDC. How can they be such fools? How dare they put our lives at increased risk again?

(11,949 posts)Because if you are vaccinated you have a around a 1 in 850,000 chance of dying of Covid. 100 million vaccinated Americans. Less than 150 deaths among them.
The CDC, and scientists as a whole just make recommendations on data at hand. Not politics or fears.
There is no justification for recommending Americans who are fully vaccinated to continue wearing masks.
We will continue to have Americans die from Covid. But with few exceptions they will be those who refuse the vaccination.
You may be a better person than I and be happy to continue living in masks and no real contact with friends. Im not. I could give a shit.
Im vaccinated. Im safe.

(202 posts)Do you work with hundreds of members of the public every day? I'm guessing not. I do and others like me do. The maskless rule, and its willful misinterpretation would also increase your risk and increase the risk to your friends and family.
I'm glad that you and others like you will be living a more normal life. My situation has been worsened and my risk has been increased by the CDC's decision. If you don't understand how, stand at the checkout stand of any store for 8 hours.

(2,203 posts)Whether that low breakthrough infection rate for vaccinated people is due solely to their shot or is partly due to their wearing of masks and social distancing? I can't see how you would separate the shot alone as the only factor in their protection thus far. Therefore I will continue to wear a mask until that is understood to me.

(11,949 posts)But counterbalancing it is the fact that as more and more people get vaccinated there will be an increased downward trend in cases spreading thru lack of potential carriers.
But even if mortality among vaccinated people were to double to 2 in 850,000 Americans, that number would still not justify continuing masking and distancing. In my opinion of course. Obviously many on DU disagree.

(2,203 posts)this will encourage 'maskholes' to defy guidelines in our midst and it is mainly the children who are now going to be the most susceptible.

(14,004 posts)I think mask wearing has been politicized on our side too. Many people appear to be advocating for masks just because it goes against the maskholes. People are free to stay masked up but soon the state mandates need to end unless a variant spreads that evades the vaccine. But otherwise, I expect Darwin will be at work with the anti-vaxxers from here on out.

(11,476 posts)I had put of mammogram last year so I finally got one today. I hadn't been to hospital since this began. Luckily breast center has own entrance. Lady sitting there by door giving out guest passes as she took temp and you could only come in with appt. that all made me feel good.
What did not make me feel good was nurse told me many who work at hospital not getting vaccinated, she said she did though. I asked why not and she said they wanted to wait.
I kept thinking isn't covid scarier than vaccines?

(24 posts)I will follow whatever rule(s) my governor puts in place. In NJ Gov. Murphy seems like he will keep the indoor mask restriction in place for a bit longer.
To me it makes sense. There are still people either waiting to get vaccinated, or waiting for a second dose. So for the sake of those that just haven't gotten it yet but intend to get it, I'm fine with the masks for a bit longer.

(1,954 posts)On top of the huge boost to personal self-confidence anonymity offers, I've felt better about interpersonal interaction than I have in my entire life. For the socially anxious, prone to illlness or otherwise impaired, this has been an incredible boon (body count notwithstanding). I just had a conversation at the local gas station that folk like us, we're unlikely to stop wearing masks regardless.
My wife agrees, and because of COVID, she's been able to make the full push to remote learning, allowing her to finally move from her country over here to be with me and still being able to work at her old job.
I know the pandemic reaped a large toll in human life, but it's completely overhauled a lot of the less savory natures of society, like the starvation wages or completely unnecessary infrastructure (Like corporate offices that can be utterly eliminated in lieu of remote work.) A lot of awful shit has happened, but a large amount of 'good' can still be claimed from the ashes. Far less need for cities and super-urban development when companies have realized they don't need to hyper-concentrate their workforce into as small a cubicle-filled area as possible.

(5,499 posts)Otherwise the anti-vaxxers are going to point to continued mask wearing as a reason why they are not getting vaccinated. They'll argue that the vaccine isn't effective. I'll continue to wear the mask where I'm asked to wear it. But otherwise I'm going to take it off. I think the vaccine mitigates the risk to an acceptable level. That has always been the goal.

(13,571 posts)I had an appointment with a new cardiologist, Harvard educated, a very serious hot shot in the field.
It was about fifteen minutes into the interview when he asked my age. The resident physician in the room told him.
And he was shocked. "I thought you were (twenty years younger)! Congratulations!"
Thank you, faithful mask! Twenty years younger!

Otherwise I'm done until flu season. I will wear a mask indoors and in public when that comes around.
I have followed CDC advice since this started and will continue to.
