To Democrats, it seems that Republicans are trying to gloss over the facts of the insurrection at every turn.

Four months after a siege on the Capitol, much of the House is still living like its Jan. 7.
A sizable faction of the House GOP is downplaying Jan. 6's violent attack by a pro-Trump mob, with one Republican comparing it to a normal tourist visit. Infuriated Democrats say remarks like that plus this week's public ousting of the most vocal Trump critic in the GOP is further proof of the extremism overtaking the Republican Party, leaving little chance of healing the political and psychological wounds caused by the deadly assault on Congress.
The rift between the two parties over the insurrection is worse today than its been at perhaps any point since early January, with lawmakers openly berating each other in the hallways and refusing to partner on legislation. The fractious breakdown of what little bipartisan comity remained in the House is playing out, of course, in the long shadow of the former president.
And the growing tide of GOP insurrection revisionism could turn the already-bitter divide between House Democrats and Republicans who voted to support Donald Trump's election challenges into permanent cold war.

[Thought I'd try writing something on the "light side"]
A NEW DAY FOR AMERICA IS COMING
(And Who Says Republicans Dont Have a Sense of Humor?)
By Al Garcia
I heard a rumor that a seven-member Republican delegation would be headed to North Korea shortly, headed by Lindsey Graham, to gather information on how to best begin the national idolization, veneration and national reverence and worship of Donald J. Trump as Americas supreme leader and savior.
The other six members of the delegation, according to the rumor I heard, are Kevin McCarthy, Elise Stefanik, Jim Jordan, Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz and Marjorie Taylor Greene.
The first part of their exploration into the cult-tilization process by the Republican Party has already been completed the erection of a golden statute in their leaders image. What the fact-finding delegation is interested in now, according to the information I heard, was learning about how they (the North Koreans) set up their re-education and worship centers throughout their country, and how many giant statues and monuments of a leader are actually needed or required in a nation the size of America, and the proper placement of such statues and monuments throughout the country.
Also on the agenda, according to sources, is finding the right way to close all churches, synagogues, mosques, and other such places of worship, and replacing them with Trump hotels and resorts throughout the country, for followers to gather and pay tribute and their treasure to Americas true and divinely-sent leader.
Also on the delegations schedule, is visiting factories and manufacturers in North Korea, to look at possible official uniforms for Americans to wear to "unite" them, with the caveat that any design must include a splash of gold -- maybe even the letter T in gold embossed on the front. However, I am told, they are open to suggestions, as Jared and Ivanka would be making the final decision on a national uniform.
Already, plans are underway, I understand, by Mitch McConnell and others in Congress, to move the seat of government to Palm Beach, Florida more specifically, the Mar-a-Lago Resort, where the new throne of government would be located. And, members of Congress would only convene when summoned for special occasions, but certainly for state parades and pageants. I am told that some members of Congress have already begun pilgrimage to this now sacred site.
So many other changes are in the works, I understand. No need for the Supreme Court or other such meddlesome, intrusive and prying institutions. They served their purpose, but now its a new day in America.
That new day for America is coming. And, we dont have to do a thing. All we have to do is sit back, wait, and be told what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. No more thinking. No more having to wait in lines to vote. No more choices -- of any kind, to make our lives more difficult or complicated. The new Republican Party will take care of everything. We couldnt ask for anything more.
The new Republican vision of American North Korea decked out in red, white, blue and gold, and us ordinary Americans standing out in the hot sun, wearing red and gold caps, and waving red, white, blue and gold flags, continuously, until we are told to stop. The parade is over. And so, too, the American Dream.
After I heard this, I thought it a very unfunny joke or rumor. All it did was make me think and wonder of all the things that are going on right now in State Legislatures across the country. Is this actually the first step? Is it really just a joke? Or, are we really in trouble? I ain't laughing!

(7,510 posts)Moving quickly, Brooks slammed his metal-topped cane onto the unsuspecting Sumner's head. As Brooks struck again and again, Sumner rose and lurched blindly about the chamber, futilely attempting to protect himself. After a very long minute, it ended.
Bleeding profusely, Sumner was carried away. Brooks walked calmly out of the chamber without being detained by the stunned onlookers. Overnight, both men became heroes in their respective regions.
Surviving a House censure resolution, Brooks resigned, was immediately reelected, and soon thereafter died at age 37. Sumner recovered slowly and returned to the Senate, where he remained for another 18 years. The nation, suffering from the breakdown of reasoned discourse that this event symbolized, tumbled onward toward the catastrophe of civil war.
