Why it matters: The formation of a bipartisan Jan. 6 commission had been delayed for months, after some Republicans insisted that the scope of the investigation be expanded to include violence by far-left protesters last summer.
Details, according to the House Homeland Security Committee:
Legislation will establish a 10-person bipartisan commission. Five commissioners, including the chair, will be appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The other five, including the vice chair, will be appointed by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

(92,219 posts)distraction to be part of the hearings, then this will be a worthless exercise in both siderisms, and nothing will come out of it
I am really sick and tired of the overt destruction of our democracy by the republicans

(7,282 posts)to characterize Jan 6th as a day of Tourism, and any of the bad stuff we saw on tv was antifa.
Totally against Congress comprised commission. We need FACT based commission. Not a Barnum and Bailey Clown Show.
Waste of time, labor, and money unless we have a REALITY BASED commission.

(33,164 posts)An even number of 'bipartisan' commissioners 5 from each party, ensures a toothless Kabuki dance.
Cheney would have been a wild card the GQP couldn't risk.
Nonpartisan would've been better.

INDIFFERENCE THE SILENT KILLER
By Al Garcia
I hear the sound of discontent across our land, as I see the crumbling and collapsing structures of our greatness tumble into the dustbin of history, and into oblivion. I hear the muted voices of reason and of credence drowned out by the abhorrent chants of treachery and betrayal. And I saw the emerging face of evil and hate rise from the ashes of our past not long ago, as hordes of misanthropes of every sort, from every nook and cranny, and from under every rock, come out to denigrate and malign their heritage, their legacy, and all the champions and of heroes who selflessly sacrificed body and soul, for an idea and for ideals greater than themselves, in order to nurture and sustain the continuance of the American dream, and the democracy on which it stands.
I am stymied by the silence, the hesitancy and the wavering vacillation by those that profess to protect, defend and support the very foundation of our eminence and significance as a nation, and as a people, be them Democrats, Republicans, Independents, or of any other political persuasion. Once upon a time, I remember when Americans of all persuasions spoke with one voice and one purpose when confronted with any type of internal or external threat or menace to the conduct or survival of our democracy. We circled the wagons, and became one, spoke as one, and rose up together as one.
Today, I see America shattered, tired, traumatized, but most of all, dumbfounded, by the apparent mutilation of the ideals, and the attempted obliteration of the humanity that was America and that united American.
I remember seeing Americans coming together in war and in peace, when now I see too many Americans banning together for no other reason than to disrupt, distort, and pervert the very heart and soul of America. I remember when America was about "we the people" people of all colors, all religions, and from all over the world a melting pot of humanity who together blended their ideas and their ideals into a touchstone of excellence and exceptionalism. And I remember when the radiance and brilliance of our democracy outshined the golden rays of sun.
Now I see and hear a different America. An America where division and diversion have replaced unity and purpose. An America where ideas and ideals have been cast aside in place of greed, arrogance and power. And I see an America and the great American dream, dying before my eyes, as the rhetoric and acts of hate, bigotry, racism and evil begin to take root in the heart and soul of those that have betrayed themselves and betrayed their American family and American legacy.
As a veteran, I fought alongside friends and strangers to uphold and protect the American ideals of freedom, liberty and justice for all. Many, including some I knew and walked and talked with, were sacrificed in bloody battles. Never would they have thought that they were fighting to allow a home-grown American effort to disregard the very idea of our government and our governance, or the rejection of every basic tenet of our democracy. Never. And yet here we are teetering on January 6th, on the verge of witnessing the overthrow of the very democracy they were dying for -- a new America, based on the antithesis of everything American soldiers and veterans and ordinary citizens ever fought for, or supported genuine principles, morals, ethics, integrity and truth.
We were, for so long, a proud and strong nation, made up of idealist, optimists, romantics and dreamers. Now, we are a nation divided and obsessed with the remaking of America into the image of autocratic, despotic, oppressive and tyrannical regimes that we once abhorred and reviled. An obsession and fixation like this by so many thoughtless and impulsive minds never ends well. History has already taught us that, time and time again.
The movement to undermine our democracy scares me, and it betrays not only my service, but the sacrifices of my friends, and of the many nameless and faceless others who never returned to the America they loved, cherished and honored with their lives.
Indifference the silent killer of dreams, of the human spirit, and of nations, once strong and once invincible.
This is but the first small step toward returning to truth . . .

(2,935 posts)It would be better to get some non-partisan investigation experts to form a commission into what happened on Jan 6th.
