Dems gave Rs two *big* asks on the 1/6 Commission: Evenly divided membership and R-picked members have *veto power* over subpoenas.

Lawmakers in a key House committee have agreed to put forth a bill that would create a bipartisan, independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson said he reached an agreement with the panel’s top Republican, John Katko of New York, on legislation that would create a 10-person panel to conduct the investigation and make recommendations.

Each party’s leadership would have five appointees on the panel, with Democrats appointing the chair and Republicans the vice chair, and subpoenas would require bipartisan support.

“It is imperative that we seek the truth of what happened on January 6 with an independent, bipartisan 9/11-type Commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes and security relating to the terrorist mob attack,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s office said the full chamber next week will vote on the bill setting up the commission.

Katko is one of the Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump on the charge of inciting the insurrection that day.

I was just reading this morning a book about the inner workings of the 9-11 Commission.

The head staffer on the Commission was a partner of Condi Rice, had worked on the Bush transition team, had helped the Bush Administration justify the Iraq invasion, and was in constant (secret) contact throughout the investigation with Condi and Rove.

Needless to say, the Commission released a tepid report that cleared the Administration and justified the Bush agenda.

As in Republicans can block a subpoena if they vote as a block, preventing a needed majority to issue one. That means Democrats would have to convince one Republican appointee to join them in seeking a subpoena. A problem to be sure, but some of the most obvious subpoena requests might be backed by one or two Republican appointees, probably from among McConnell's picks who I don't think will uniformly all be total wingnuts.
