A raft of influential progressive and environmental groups has a message for the Biden White House on its efforts to cut an infrastructure deal with Republicans: Dont say we didnt warn you.
They are sounding the alarms that compromising with Republicans on a scaled-down infrastructure bill and spending the time that such a deal might require could make it increasingly difficult to pass the rest of Bidens sweeping agenda.
Its a risky strategy, John Podesta, the founder of the left-leaning Center for American Progress, told POLITICO.
Podesta, the measured former counselor to President Barack Obama whose words carry weight among Democrats, is among more than a dozen liberal leaders and groups who signed a letter urging the White House and congressional leaders to act quickly on his massive $4 trillion infrastructure proposal, casting it as a once-in-a-lifetime moment that Democrats should seize on now.

Joe can make the attempt to reach out but if the Repukes do not reciprocate we should go on without them.

(15,124 posts)How many Republicans voted for it?
One definition of "insanity" is doing the same thing again and again while expecting a different result.
The Republicans can't lead and they won't follow. The least they can do---which is all anyone expects from them---is to get the hell out of the way

Just how many times did Trump and/or McConnell ask the Dems about a single F***ing thing??????
Offer to listen, then go on, full steam ahead.
THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BE PLAYING PATTY-CAKE, OR TO PUSSY FOOTING AROUND. TOO MUCH IS AT STAKE.

(13,571 posts)We've already been steamrolled even before the 2020 election. All these "negotiations" with obstructionists are a trap.

(20,629 posts)We water down "Infrastructure Lite, Part 1" to the point where Republicans are "satisfied" with it, and then watch exactly none of them vote for it. We're forced to pass it through reconciliation.
When we bring "Infrastructure Sweeping, Part 2" to the floor, Joe Manchin will say, "I already voted for infrastructure! Why should I vote on a second bill on the same subject, to spend even more money!"
Podesta is totally on the money in his assessment.

(16,375 posts)We only have 50 Senators and two are insisting on working with the other side. The idea is to try good faith negotiation to persuade the two Dem holdouts to vote for reconciliation when the Rs who are negotiating now, make it clear they aren't acting in good faith and will vote no on anything, as McConnell insists. Biden has set a deadline for next month.
If anyone knows this game, it's President Biden.

(10,053 posts)and a lot of it I think is for the benefit of Manchin. I am hoping that when Biden proves to him that he has made the effort and republicans are refusing to play, then he will come around. My biggest concern is if we lose a dem senator in a republican state.

(68,586 posts)Manchi and Sinema...now what exactly should Joe and Democratic leaders do...always blame the Democratic Party. Podesta as usual has a breathless complaint and no solutions...that is what is wrong with some of these left organizations...they demand and demand the impossible and offer few solutions. There is going to be some sort of compromise or we get nothing and we may get nothing anyway. Try electing more Democrats and everyone needs to show up at the polls because this election coming up is as important as any presidential election. We lose the House and we get nothing in terms of policy. In the meantime perhaps some could refrain from attacking Pres. Biden and Democratic leaders.

(19,204 posts)For him to not consult with, or at least try to work with republiCANTS, would mean Joe lied to the country. Lies and deceit are THE OTHER GUY'S bailiwick, not Biden's.
I suggest far-left progressives calm down a bit, and see what transpires. Joe hasn't disappointed so far, and I don't think he will here either.
