In a surprisingly strong move,

In a surprisingly strong move,

@Sen_JoeManchin
has proposed making the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct apply “to all 50 states and territories.” ALL states would be required to submit any new voting rules to federal review in order to ensure the new rule won’t target voters of color.

These actions are a direct and wide-ranging assault on democracy that spans across 48 states from Arizona to New Hampshire, and from Michigan to Texas to Georgia, and demands a response from all stakeholders in America. Silence cannot be an option.

This coordinated, national attack on Americans’ freedom to vote demands that Congress urgently respond with federal action to protect voting rights for all eligible voters. Congress must pass both #HR1, the #ForThePeopleAct, as well as the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct. (4/6)

...................

Why Congress must pass HR 1 and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act
Republican state legislators nationwide are already moving fast to restrict our freedom to vote

In the 2020 election, we used our vote, whether it was cast early, by mail or on Election Day, to determine the future for our family, community and country. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice and the confusion and sudden changes to the voting process thrown at us, we showed up and decided the outcome of a free and fair election.

Now, after showing our power as voters, some partisan politicians in state legislatures are pushing bills that would restrict our freedom to vote, while Congress is on the verge of passing laws to protect and strengthen it.

Already in 2021, more than 250 bills in 43 states have been introduced by Republican state legislators that create more unnecessary barriers to voting. From cutting early voting, to increasing purges of voter registration lists, to limiting absentee voting options, these bills are shameless, partisan attempts to silence us. It is not a coincidence that these bills are being introduced after a free, fair and secure election with record turnout. Americans exercised their right to vote, and these politicians’ response is “We don’t want you to vote.” Under the guise of “election integrity,” many of these bills target voters of color and young voters who already face many barriers to the ballot box. They have nothing to do with election integrity and are simply an attack on our freedom to vote.

2. I have read conflicting things about Manchin's alternative, including that its inclusiveness

may well be all but assured to end up being overthrown by the courts and that is why some R's may support it. I haven't had time to read the reasoning and have yet to find the article I quickly read this morning...

But, this may be a poison pill--whether unintentional or not.

5. What does it mean, submitting it to federal review?

Does it mean the courts need to review it before states can vote on it? It could needlessly tie up the courts or even SCOTUS.

11. Usually, the DOJ would review the new laws ....

and have them modified to comply with the Voting Rights Act.

But when the SCOTUS voted down the primary parts of the Voting Rights Act,
it pretty much neutered the DOJ.

is an issue. It might be disingenuous as hell and lead to nowhere, but it's better than nothing.

he'll say "fine" and vote to change or get rid of the filibuster.

Of course, we've still got Mitch's best buddy Sen. Sinema to contend with.

9. Saw Franken and Amy Klobuchar interviewed on msnbc. They both feel some form of a voting

Rights act will be passed.

Senator Klobuchar told Rachael they have a doable plan. Neither Franken of Klobuchar are ones to give lip service. It’s coming. We may not get everything we want...of course.

And, much of the new laws passed by the states aren’t worth the paper they are written on! If not all, certainty the most egregious parts will be struck down in the courts. If you want updates on the current law suits follow Marc Elias and democracydocket.org

I put my faith in our dem leaders as they haven’t yet lead us astray during these difficult times.
