The nations largest nurses union condemned the new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that stipulates fully vaccinated people do not have to wear masks in most settings.
National Nurses United (NNU) in a statement Saturday said it was concerned that it would put patients, front-line workers and nurses at risk amid a pandemic that is still present in the US.
This newest CDC guidance is not based on science, does not protect public health, and threatens the lives of patients, nurses, and other frontline workers across the country, said NNU Executive Director Bonnie Castillo. Now is not the time to relax protective measures, and we are outraged that the CDC has done just that while we are still in the midst of the deadliest pandemic in a century.
CDC issued this new guidance even though the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) emergency temporary standard mandated by President Bidens Jan. 21 executive order has been delayed for two months. This lack of protection compounds the dangers that nurses and other essential workers continue to face on the job, Castillo added.

(33,643 posts)I shall watch this debate with interest.
My mom has a masters in nursing admin, and was a nurse in her younger days, and worked in hospitals until her retirement, in various capacities.
I tend to trust nurses, but ... I also trust the CDC.

(6,254 posts)misstep but how can Rs call him out when this is what they wanted? The tyranny of the mask is over from the federal governments perspective. Shrewd move. He took the issue away from them and said its time be big boys and girls and get vaccinated and if you dont, oh well, you might get sick or die. The whole personal responsibility thingy they talk so much about.

Today i went to a couple of stores where I regularly shop, so I know the usual behavior of the customers and employees. There is almost always someone without a mask, or who pulls it down once past the entrance, or leaves their naked nose hanging out, or who crowds people at the register line. Often there are more than one like this, including employees.
Today I noticed that everyone wore a mask, and wore it correctly. Could it be that, without something to "prove" or an authority to rebel against, people are complying voluntarily? Or, maybe knowing that unvaccinated people, possibly carriers, could be out and about, people fear them enough to stop defying mask wearing?
I passed a restaurant on the way and saw people putting on their masks as they entered. Seems pointless to me since they will remove the masks in order to eat, but they were complying with mask rules despite the CDC announcement.

(1,969 posts)Vaccinated. I am shocked at the number of health professionals that have refused vaccination.

(205,467 posts)My friend who works in the local hospital ER was the first person I knew to be vaccinated. She had to drive to a major hospital downstate to get the Pfizer, it was not yet available here locally - and she said that all her fellow frontline health workers got a bonus for doing so.
I was very relieved and excited when I was finally able to get mine - offered at local CVS pharmacies. And when I mentioned it to an older gentleman I know - he's in his mid 80s - he said he wasn't getting the vaccine because his daughter who's a nurse at the hospital wasn't getting it and he gets his medical advice from her.

(1,910 posts)Wrong on several counts. First, any private business can insist masks be worn still. So their hospitals policy will not change. And wrong because the vaccination rate is ready to flat line, now the hesitant must be given a reason to get vaccinated. I know several extended family members who now are going to get it because vaccine equals freedom from masks.
Common sense also says any nurses and front line workers should already have been vaccinated months ago so they are fine.
