A surge of newcomers pack Georgia GOP meetings across state

By Greg Bluestein, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The grassroots effort to punish Gov. Brian Kemp largely fizzled at key Republican meetings across the state this weekend even as record crowds of activists continued a relentless focus on former President Donald Trump’s lies about Georgia’s election results.

Fury over Trump’s narrow defeat combined with anger at President Joe Biden’s administration helped bring a surge of new faces to the weekend meetings, held in 13 of Georgia’s 14 congressional districts. Many speakers repeated Trump’s false claims of widespread election fraud in Georgia, which have been repeatedly debunked.

The uptick in participation evoked memories of the round of Republican meetings in 2016, when Trump brought legions of new conservative supporters to sleepy party gatherings often dominated by establishment figures or long-standing volunteers.

In west Georgia’s 3rd Congressional District, former state Sen. Josh McKoon asked for a show of hands and was surprised to find more than half of the 274 delegates had never attended a convention before.

White people are coming out of the woodwork in Georgia because African Americans in Georgia made a difference. Georgia whites are not going to just sit by and let black people have a vote. Ain't gonna happen.

These are the same people who ran to the Republican party and voted Roy Barnes out of office years ago for the great sin of pushing to get the confederate flag off the GA state flag. Metro Atlanta is changing for the good. The rest of Georgia is still pretty much the same Jim Crow loving latrine hole it always was.

Because all these independent, free-thinking, rugged individualists were told to be angry about things like an effective response to the pandemic, cash assistance to people in terrible need, and a sudden end to the presidential outrage du jour they loved so much from the former guy. Yeah, you can sure get angry about that, can't you?

The ones I know are people who were totally uninvolved with any thing political, any current events, never read a book, couldn't point out China on a globe. Most couldn't tell you the name of their Congressman or Mayor.

They were instead fans of TV shows, sports, gossip.

I think the genius of the "conservative movement" is to make politics entertaining, getting people involved who don't know any better, who have never sat down and thought about issues but instead will gravitate towards excitement and celebrity and catfights.

They are like immature teenagers introduced to sex for the first time. They miss the real meaning and value of the relationship, and instead are blinded by lust and hormones.

Talk radio is "funny". FOX News creates TV celebrities and offers glamorous eye candy. RW media provides dramatic conflicts and tells folks which side to stand on. Politics is the new wrasslin'.

Meanwhile, they see liberals as boring pointy head intellectuals who lecture them on proper behavior.
