(13,870 posts)While we are laughing at them and calling them stupid they are taking over the governance of the country. For those like her it's a grift, the recognition that there's a lot of money to be made by turning their Congressional gigs into self promotional opportunities. The getting is good may last a lot longer than we will like or our system of government will be able to withstand.

(557 posts)That Republican sabotage has been going on under the radar for decades. After all, one of the pillars of democracy is an informed electorate. That has two foundations - an public that has a good education, and that has a proper grasp on events (*gasp* reality). Why do you think local and state school boards are so Repub heavy? Their goal is the dumbing down of America, as a stupid public is one that is easily led rightwards. They've been working on corrupting the press for nearly as long, for the same ends.
DeVos was appointed not to kill the schools (they were already on life support from years of slow degradation) but to administer the coup de grace. Another term and she might have succeeded.
The reason De Joy got so much attention is that the post office was only wounded (from that pension mandate thing). In four years he tried to get the USPS to the same state of dysfunction as the schools, and he got pretty damn close.
Why don't Democrats consider the national school systems as important to their ends as the Republicans obviously do? Dems make a fuss about the assaults on the press and the USPS, but it it's like crickets when it comes to the schools. With few exceptions, I don't see them making a concertive effort to pack the boards and bend the systems back to functionality. It's like Progressives have ceded the field to the Repubs.
The exceptions I mentioned? Urban areas with a majority (or at least a parity) of minority populations, as the schools in their current state, with a police-state presence and the school to prison pipelines that goes with it, plus the culture-war curriculums, are especially bad for minority students.
... sorry for the rant.
