Aida de Acosta, a Cuban-American, was the first woman to fly a powered aircraft by herself. In 1903, while in Paris with her mother, she caught her first glimpse of dirigibles. She proceeded to take 3 flight lessons, and took to the sky by herself.

(90,690 posts)3. Very cool! Love these stories about independent women...
Heres a book I found at Gutenberg.org: The Woman and the Car, by Dorothy Levitt 1909.
She explains everything a woman would need to know about how to operate and fix a car by herself when motoring alone through the English countryside. She also raced.

(4,831 posts)5. On the other hand, there was my Grandmother.
Born 1891, died 1984. Never learned to drive. Never took work outside of home. Raised 6 kids. My grandfather made $295/mo in the 50s right before retiring from his 50 years of teaching school. I never heard my grandmother say one thing about politics, ever.
