Fully vaccinated Americans no longer need to wear a mask outside or in most indoor spaces, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in guidelines Thursday. But not all states immediately took the guidance on board.

States and businesses can still maintain their existing mask rules if they want - and some retailers have already said that fully vaccinated people must continue to wear masks in-store.

After the CDC issued its guidelines, thirteen states said they would relax mask-wearing rules. These were Minnesota, Kentucky, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Illinois, Connecticut, North Carolina, Michigan, Maryland, Maine, and Virginia.

Other states - including New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and California - say they're keeping their mask requirements while they review the evidence.

Cuomo ends NY indoor mask mandate for vaccinated

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced on Monday that New York will be adopting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's new mask recommendations, allowing fully vaccinated people to go without masks in most places.

"Effective Wednesday, NYS will adopt the CDC's new mask & social distancing guidance for vaccinated people," Cuomo tweeted. "Unvaccinated people should continue to wear a mask."

Cuomo added that masks will still be required on public transport, schools and "some communal settings" such as nursing homes, correctional facilities and homeless shelters.

Private venues will still be permitted to have mask requirements.

Cuomo says vaccinated New Yorkers can go mask-free, adopts CDC guidance

Fully vaccinated New Yorkers can ditch their masks in most circumstances starting Wednesday as the Empire State adopts guidance from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The seismic shift will come the same day that a majority of capacity limits are scrapped and New York moves a major step closer to normal, Gov. Cuomo said Monday.

“If you are vaccinated, you are safe,” the governor said during a press briefing held at Radio City Music Hall. “No masks, no social distancing.”

The new guidance still calls for masks to be worn in some crowded indoor settings and on mass transit.
