(23,993 posts)...is a device to correct a variety of head shape abnormalities generally called plagiocephaly. It would certainly protect the baby's head from an errant baseball, but that it not why it is being worn.

while it is impossible not to admire this gal, no way would I take an infant to a baseball game

(16,399 posts)That's when the back of a baby's head starts to flatten from spending too much time lying on their back.
It started to be a fairly common problem after the experts figured out that putting babies to sleep on their backs results in fewer deaths from SIDS. The flattening is harmless, but it can look a little weird if it's not corrected.
I remember always putting my daughter to bed on her stomach when she was a baby, because that was the guidance we were given back in the 80s. Who knew?

(49,990 posts)Tiffany Goodwin was doing what comes naturally. She stood, followed the flight of the ball, reached out and caught the foul pop-up in the baseball glove on her left hand while holding 8-month-old son Jerry in her right.
Just another day at the ol' ballyard for the Goodwin family.
It was the second foul ball Tiffany, 31, snared at a Richmond Flying Squirrels' game at The Diamond. She caught a line drive last Friday.
"We were on our way to the game Sunday and my husband (Allen) said he's been waiting 38 years and never caught a foul ball," Tiffany said. "I told him, 'Maybe you'll get a chance today.' "
Instead, Tiffany made the play.
"He said, 'I called you off, I called you off. I could have had it.' But it was already in my glove, and I told him possession is nine-tenths of the law," Tiffany said, laughing...

(914 posts)Loved going when he was three, as well. Great age to introduce them to organized sports and watching the "big guys" instills dreams and motivation.
Also, a head "deformation" doesn't necessarily make it any more or less safe.
