show me someone who is so completely opposed to masks that they go into surgery that all the medical staff that are about to operate on them take off their masks for the entire duration of the procedure, and sure, ok, that person is stupid.

because everyone knows that that would put them at risk of a dangerous, possibly lethal infection.

there may be some people who are that stupid, but i'm willing to bet that the vast majority of anti-maskers would insist their surgeon and everyone else in the room wear a mask.


because they're not actually that stupid. they know damn well that refusing to wear a mask puts others at risk.

thought exercise: if some muslims had come from the middle east and had done exactly what the anti-maskers did, would the anti-maskers have defended their freedom to do so? of course not, they'd have insisted on nuking their home country. *then* they would have recognized such behavior as terrorism.

But really, on this particular point, I think the vast majority of them aren't stupid. They certainly may be stupid in other respects, but on the question of the health benefits to others of wearing masks, I think they do understand that they are putting others in harms way.

The problem is more that these people are easily led, at least by the right-wing media and politicians.

Being easily led is not the same as being stupid.

Furthermore, calling them stupid doesn't get us anywhere. And their stupidity isn't the point.
