Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren's husband arrested on drug and weapons charge

New York state police raided the home of Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren on Wednesday, and her husband was later arrested on drugs and weapons charges, officials said. Timothy Granison, Warren's 42-year-old husband, appeared Thursday via video in Rochester City Court from the Monroe County jail, where he spent the night.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of illegal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to sell. He was released without bail and his next court date was set for June 21. The raid was part of a seven-month-long, local drug probe that didn't originally target Granison, officials said. But once the mayor's husband got on the police radar three months ago, Rochester authorities looped in state police.

Seven people were arrested and two kilos of crack and powder cocaine seized, officials said."That's significant, especially for this community, " Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley. Police also seized four weapons, a semi-automatic rifle and three handguns, and $100,000 cash in the raids on Wednesday. The rifle and one of the handguns were taken from Warren's home, police said. "The handgun was unregistered, yes. The rifle has issues separate from that," state police Maj. Barry Chase said.

The probe also involved wire taps and authorities declined to say if the mayor was captured in the confidential recordings. Police said they want to interview Warren, but haven't heard back from her.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren was indicted Friday on charges she broke campaign finance rules and committed fraud during her reelection campaign three years ago, adding another layer of crisis in a city that has been reeling over its handling over a police killing. Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley also announced charges against Warren's campaign treasurer, Albert Jones Jr., and the treasurer of her political action committee, Rosalind Brooks-Harris.

The indictment dramatically increases political peril for Warren, who was already facing calls to resign for the city's handling of the suffocation of Daniel Prude. The Democrat is midway through her second term as the first female and second Black mayor of Rochester, a city of more than 200,000 by Lake Ontario.

State Board of Elections investigators had previously concluded there was "considerable evidence" that Warren, her associates and a political action committee supporting her campaign took steps to intentionally evade campaign donation limits, according to local media reports.

Doorley said Warren and the others took steps to evade contribution limits between Nov. 6, 2013 and Nov. 7, 2017. "The indictment alleges that it was not a mistake," Doorley told reporters. CBS affiliate WROC-TV reports the district attorney said the legal process in this case could be a long one and the indictment was "not political."
