Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says colleagues too scared to talk about attempted coup

Last edited Sat May 22, 2021, 01:02 AM - Edit history (2)

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calls the Capitol riot an 'all-out attempted coup' and hints her House colleagues are too scared to talk about it

'It has deeply, deeply affected lawmaking, policy making and it's very quiet, it's not spoken about,' she told journalist Maria Hinojosa in an interview airing Friday on the weekly public radio show 'Latino USA' and shared in advance with NBC News.

She pointed to how Vice President Mike Pence was rushed out of the Senate chamber will about a minute to spare as the insurrectionists came looking for him.

The crowd, made of mostly of Donald Trump supporters, were disrupting Congress' certification of Joe Biden's electoral college win. Pence was overseeing the process in his ceremonial role as vice president and had no authority to stop it despite pressure from Trump to do so.

'Pence was the one person, arguably, that had one of the most important roles in making sure that procedurally the Electoral College counts went on as proceeded. Sixty seconds could have meant potentially the difference between what we have right now and a martial state,' Ocasio-Cortez said. 'This was an all-out attempted coup.'

'If 60 seconds went differently, if a different door was opened, if a chair wasn't barricaded in a certain way, we could have a completely different reality right now,' she said. 'We don't want to acknowledge that that's how close we got, but that is how close we got.'

We have to keep this alive. Especially since the guilty other side desperately wants it dead AND DEEPLY buried.

I also don't normally like linking to them. But they did quote her which our timid press often will not.

I would love to compare better media coverage by CNN or MSNBC though. Got a link?

It's beginning to sink in with the public too.

I've spent some time this spring comparing it to the October 1917 Revolution, and it is apparent from the only western journalist's account on the scene (John Reed, "Ten Days That Shook The World&quot that 1917 was an insurrection as often described back then, and it compares very closely to the tactics of January 2021. A non-military political coup is aimed at the institutions of government - the legislature usually - by a coherent band of political operatives directing thuggery with ideology and incitement. There are lies being told to the public, false initiatives to opposition parties, and proclamations of patriotism of the leaders and operative of the insurrection. All aimed at the existing political structure to disable it so that power can be seized by the coup leaders.

It's confusing of course because the Bolsheviks are written in history as a revolution from the left because that is the ideology of their leaders, but once it was over and they seized power, they ruled like dictators every bit as much as a fascist political force. In 2021 we have a coup from the right with essentially libertarian capitalists and oligarchs. But my read is both are characterized as insurrections.

It took some real guts to bring everybody back there after what happened that day.
Pence knew he could have been assassinated that day, but he still came back and did his job.
They ALL did, and I give them credit for that.

nor sexism, racism(yet more these days), slavery, segregation, modern redlining, ageism, homophobia, fear of alternate lifestyles outside of KKKristianity. And the open dialog that opens all of these very dark, evil putrid wells of hate is not approached to allow light. All that is needed is a national dialog. RWers are going to be the polluters of those wells till the end of time. I just hope there are reasonable, rational RWers in numbers enough to make a real turnaround possible in the Party of trump. What used to be the Republican Party. America and Americans better get our shit together. Many crises still looming out in the big, bad world that threatens all breathing the same air.

I just hope we are strong enough. Wise enough to try to heal a nation broken since Jamestown 1619.
