New York Librarian Accused of Robbing Bank

I cannot imagine a more unlikely suspect for this crime, however, she was caught red handed.

Police in New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City, said the suspect handed a note to a Chase bank teller that said, "Give me $100,000 I have a gun."

Police in a suburb of New York City say they arrested a local librarian after she allegedly walked into a bank located one block away from the library and robbed it.

Mary Thompson, 56, was arrested Friday morning and charged with first-degree robbery after she allegedly handed a teller at a Chase Bank a note that said, "Give me $100,000 I have a gun."

Thompson allegedly made away with $7,000, police said.

The bank is located roughly one block away from the New Rochelle Public Library, where Thompson is an employee. An online document says Thompson became acting children's department head librarian in 2018.

New Rochelle police said they apprehended Thompson outside of the bank "without further incident."

More at link.

I work with children's librarians and for the life of me, cannot imagine what must be going on with this lady. I'll bet if you researched it, you'd find --0-- bank robbers who were children's librarians.

The minute I read this story, I knew it would capture the attention of everyone.

Of course she will not go to jail, I don't care what's behind it. She'll get off with some mental thing.

I found a pic of her online but won't post it because I'm not sure it is she. However, if it is, she is about the most innocuous looking person one could imagine.

If she did go to prison, however, can you imagine what she'd do with her spare time? Besides haunting the law library, she might write a children's book: "Mrs. Thompson Robs a Bank."

Sorry, I don't mean to make light of her situation but you must admit it is pretty crazy.

... though some do. The librarian may have gotten into some acute financial trouble, and could not find another fast way out. That is why I myself once swindled a bank for quite some money many years ago. Bank found out, but they must have been too embarrassed on how easy it ways to cheat them, and did not press charges. I kept the money, and was never punished - and now this is way to old a case to prosecute me for . I never did anything like that again though.

That you got to keep the $$. I can understand the no prosecution reason.

This case reminded me of another similar one. It was an embezzlement case. A woman in one of nj’s most affluent communities got away with several million. She was the bookkeeper for a large philanthropic organization.

The thing she did that wasn’t so smart was to buy this expensive, very beautiful house over by the library, At the time the house was$775,000 and it would be well over a million now. I used to go by that house all the time and grouse to myself about it. I wanted that house but it was out of my price range. I’d ask how does a bookkeeper get a house like that?

Then we all found out.

become a member of the Wells Fargo board. They've been stealing more than a paltry $100,000.00 from clients from years. When they get caught all they do us pay back about a third of what they took.

Middle School- and many of my friends are elementary/ children's librarians.

We don't get paid much- especially for a masters level profession. This poor woman may have some serious financial problems.

She robbed a bank in her own neighborhood where she was certain to be recognized? This sounds like a desperate plea for help, or maybe it's mental illness or something else.

robbed a bank in her own neighborhood

a block from her place of employment.

Maybe she was on her lunch hour?

Or maybe convenience matters.

Seriously though, the post upthread about librarian pay probably explains it.

If that's what it turns out to be, perhaps it will point out that this is another area that needs to be addressed.

maybe she just hit a wall of stress and couldn’t take it any longer. Well, her actions sure cured that.
