Your first infrastructure proposal should be your bottom line. When the congressional opposition attempts to whittle down your proposal, add more needed items to the agenda, not fewer.
The most basic, fundamental first requirement of negotiation is that the parties both be willing to negotiate. Honesty, good faith and forthrightness along with an acknowledgment that the goal is a better country for all Americans is also an essential part of governance.
Please note that the only reason the opposition party is talking to you is for delay, obfuscation and personal aggrandizement. They seem not to be interested in anything that advances the actual interests of America as a whole, just their own juvenile and petty partisan hate agenda.
It is worthwhile noting that they have told you that they have no interest in negotiating in good faith or in any other way than that which harms YOU. They have told you, unequivocally, that they cannot be trusted, that their only real goal is to retake power and to make sure that your presidency is a failure. All so that they can reclaim that which has never been theirs in the first place.
Even at this late date they will not admit that you are a legitimate president. They continue to fantasize about false elections results. You cannot work with such people. They have demonstrated their abject immortality, their deviant hatred for others, their willful ignorance of truth, and tolerance for lies that momentarily seem to advantage them.
Tolerating and legitimating their behavior is validating it. Accepting anything less than the most basic of decency and honesty is simply not acceptable. They have attempted to take America down the road of anarchy and desperation through a badly designed coup attempt, which they are now trying to coverup their complicity in. They worship and grovel before a madman. You dont let a dog bite you twice. They, and all of us, saw how close they came to success on January 6th. They clearly have more planned.
Draw a line in the sand and stick to it, they have no stomach for true power, they will fold and buckle like all bullies. For in the end, thats all they are
.bullies. Now and forever the only way to deal with a bully is to stand your ground.

(2,868 posts)He wants to show the public, a large segment who are only half paying attention, that he tried. He can say, I compromised, I went more than halfway, but the Repubs don't want to govern, don't want to invest in America's future. So, sadly, we Dems will have to do the hard work ourselves.

(47 posts)He is calling the Republicans' bluff? He openly, repeatedly, warmly invited the R party to bring him their ideas in his address to the nation. It's highly visible for all to see when they don't. Just a thought.
