Republicans in the Senate are "ready to mount a filibuster" of legislation creating an independent panel to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, as GOP opposition to it is "hardening by the day," Politico reports.
Citing interviews with Republicans, Politico writes that there is "almost no path to even opening up debate" on the bill to create the bipartisan commission, let alone a path to actually passing it. Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) told the outlet that "I don't think there will be 10 votes on our side for it" and that he'd "be surprised" if there's "even a handful."
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who has repeatedly expressed opposition to eliminating the filibuster, in an interview "seemed aghast" that Republicans are set to block the commission, Politico wrote.
"So disheartening," he said. "It makes you really concerned about our country."

That's why we need to get rid of the filibuster.

(13,180 posts)He's right that it "shouldn't" be the case that Republicans are willing to do just about anything low whatsoever to cling to power. But it's the case. They are lost and disappointing, even relative to other human beings. Now what?

We're making the effort and they are saying "no" to everything.
They aren't even pretending they'll ever cooperate.
I have a tiny, tiny bit of hope that he'll change his mind and maybe take Sinema with him.

(5,443 posts)toward becoming the Trumpublican Party, since he's know his colleagues in the GOP for years. This is not the same Republican Party that forced Nixon to resign during Watergate or even the Party that blocked Obama's policies-- it's morphed into a cowardly self-interested group of politicians cowed by Donald Trump. Let's hope he has an epiphany and that he reforms the filibuster for the good of the country and ultimately his GOP colleagues.

(111,097 posts)He must either choose the possibility of losing his seat or the possibility of losing our democracy. It shouldn't be that difficult of a decision for him. These are extraordinary circumstances that require extraordinary actions.
Just as if and when the Supreme Court goes totally "political" and begins putting conservative political agenda over the interests of the entire nation, it will be time to look at another extraordinary action. We must all fight for our democracy. Including Joe Manchin.
