I can't see how the eastern states are split, but they're obviously small and jammed together. This is sort of a strange concept, but it could be a good conversation starter.

Secessionists in Colorado want to join Wyoming or create Northern Colorado. Five counties in Oregon and some in California want to become part of Idaho. Just what we need in a large area full of Christo-fascists.

.....redefine the state boundaries in the U.S. so they made more sense. He used economic ties, historical connections, and natural boundaries, among other things, to redraw the map so it made more sense. I think he came up with 32 or so states, and renamed them again using names that had greater significance for the newly defined area. If I remember correctly, he planned to write a book expanding upon his thesis. I have tried to find this article in the past with no success, so if anyone knows, please let me know. It was similar to this effort, but the purpose wasn't population equality.

...have so damn much in common culturally, climatically, and geographically?

This is the most ridiculous of such maps I have ever seen. At least the others posit that the country breaks apart politically and the pieces are then re-formed based on a combination of geography and culture.

I can't imagine something like this happening for many reasons.

1. I assume this map would change every 10 years for the census, or 2 or 4 years for each election. This would mean people and businesses on the borders would be forced to belong to a different State frequently, with changing laws and tax rates. It could be a dramatic change.

2. As stated before, people in vastly different areas would be part of the same state. I live in Hawaii and would follow laws in Shasta. With Hawaii being a fairly low population State, this would mean the people of Oregon and California would control Hawaii.

3. This would violate State's rights. Each state could be thought of an independent country bound together in the US. To a lesser degree, like Britain and France in the EU. Imagine telling those two they are forced to merge together.
