Reluctant defense of keeping the filibuster

If the polling trends are right and the Repugnants take back congress in 2022 the only thing that will stop them from enacting the same anti-democractic laws red states have been passing will be the fillibuster.

The first thing a GOP congress will do is pass federal laws suppressing the vote. They probably will be able to override Biden's veto. And the ultraconservative supreme court will uphold them.

Manchin and Sinema are a pain in the butt but they probably see which way the political winds are blowing. There's no excuse for them blocking bills Democrats can pass through budget reconciliation. But lifting the 60 vote Senate rule could backfire on us if McConnell becomes majority leader again.

With the way GOP state legislatures are monkeying with our election laws the midterms are really going to determine whether their evil schemes will pay off.
Our best hope obviously is to keep the House and increase our majority in the Senate. Then we'll be in a better position to eliminate the filibuster.

hesitant to abandon the filibuster. Wouldn’t mind requiring Senators to speak on floor for days, though.

we will still have the presidency.

But yes, generally speaking, the question is always, is not passing our stuff worse than them passing their stuff?

It's not an easy question.

Then again, one could argue that democracy means winners get to pass stuff, our version results in a lot of stagnation.

If this is a center left country, then let's find out. If it's a center right country, then lets find out.

Right now, it's a do nothing country.
