General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI had a horrible experience today.
I met one of the most unpleasant people I have ever in my 67 years had to deal with. I work for a home care agency. Nice retirement job I can pick the clients and the hours I want to work. I picked up a women to take her to the doctor and all she did was bitch and treat me like her personal servant. I live in Alabama and it is hot right now. My cars AC needs freon so I gave a heads up to the agency it wasn't working. I thought it was not a problem since it was 8:00 AM.
While in the waiting room she asked me to pick her teeth. PICK HER TEETH!! I politely declined. She lives within walking distance of a Publix which has a pharmacy but she had her prescriptions called in to a grocery store 8 miles away. She refused to wear her seat belt, she bitched at me about my driving (going too slow, etc.) and she got frustrated and started yelling "Shit!" at the self check out in Kroger. She repeatedly complained about the heat and I told she wasn't the only one suffering. I informed her Publix would deliver her groceries and prescriptions and Handy Ride would pick her up for Dr's appts. She lied and said she had to fill out application for Handy Ride (not true) and Publix didn't have what she wanted.
When I got off the Shift from Hell I informed my agency I never wanted to be sent back there again. She was the epitome of a Trump voter. Entitled, whiny, bitchy and just a general "nothing is my fault" persona.
I dropped her off, put up her groceries and fought off the urge to just slap her. Everything she could do to help herself she didn't want to do. She likes suffering.
End of Rant!

(90,793 posts)Ive been adamant about seatbelts for decades. Plus it is the LAW in my state. I just politely let them know Im not going anywhere, and sit with my keys in my lap. In the case of my late MIL I just fastened her belt for her.
But I have to say a b***h like your passenger I wouldnt want to get that close, any more than you did.

(24,610 posts)You wonder how you get to this advanced age and still think like a clueless dilettante. Self awareness seems to be a attribute lacking in too many adult Americans. I would guess she's a Trump voter as well.
But perhaps I am too cynical....maybe she has Alzheimer's type disease that destroys one's critical thinking while allowing the person to still function at a relatively high level while not processing how her words are taken by the person she is communicating with.

(58 posts)She is diabetic and overweight. I think she may have chronic pain. But it is self inflicted because she won't self check her blood sugar and her joints (knees) won't support her weight anymore. I have no sympathy.

(9,421 posts)similar attitude. Their only exposure, if any, with domestic workers are "the help", or "the servants". They have no clue what the difference is. Hence the attitude.
If your client has a visiting nurse or an administrator attached to her, it is best to file a complaint with them. It is their responsibility to explain the relationship between you and your clients as strictly professional one.
Besides, you might want to create a record of what is going on, just in case. But please, keep fighting the urge to slap them.

(58 posts)She had to take care of an elderly mother and never married. I think that is where the bitterness comes from.
I took care of my mother with Alzhiemers. It was living hell but she never spread toxic energy. I dealt with lots of health care workers in the course of the care of my mother and respected the dedication and work they had put into their studies to care for others.
Beastly Boy
(9,421 posts)I took care of both my elderly parents, dementia and all. I wasn't very good at it. I have learned that you have to be a true professional to do the job right. Not too many people appreciate this fact, or appreciate the professionalism of the health workers who take care of the elderly. It's a tough job. All the best to you.

(61,698 posts)stages of dementia, which can cause whiny behavior if aggravated by situations, caffeine, etc.
I wouldn't drive her any more and tell her and the agency why. If her behavior caused by a medical condition, the agency should tell you, so you can make an informed ethical decision about whether you want to continue helping her. If there is no medical reason, there is no point in you entertaining misery with anyone like her.
I take care of an octogenarian who is sometimes a royal bitch when her dementia screws up her thinking. She has accused me and her son (my spouse) of physical abuse, and one time she mocked my dead mother's walking, and called her a stuck-up fatty. I'm looking forward to moving her into a nursing home so my day is more pleasant.

I've noticed that many old people - of many different political persuasions - lose their "filters" and become mean, shitty, critical, entitled, demanding, and every other bad trait that we suppress out of politeness when we're younger.
I've seen old assholes chew out pharmacists who are desperately trying to help them. I've seen them chew out grocery store workers for the trivialest of mistakes, bitching out neighbors for Christmas lights that are "the wrong color" - the list goes on.
I know I'm on track to be one of these assholes. I don't want to be.

(14,856 posts)You're wise to avoid her in the future.
I think it's mostly Republicans who are that way, but I have an elderly Italian-American, pro-
Democratic neighbor originally from NYC who behaves similarly.
She used to seek out my help constantly, since I have a people-pleaser personality (more-so in the past), but she wouldn't even say thanks after all of my favors like driving her to stores, fixing her computer problems, etc.
I finally told her off after she knocked on my door for help yet again, gesturing me with her finger to follow her like I was her obedient pet. And she's never returned ever since, thankfully. Now she just glares at me if I happen to see her outside, like I'm the bad guy.

(111,339 posts)They are really hard to cope with, especially if you're close to them. The routine with family is generally that everyone else are ungrateful incompetents who can't do anything right oh god now don't ever leave me I'll kill myself. It's beyond crazy-making unless you know what's going on with them.
They're awful but you got off easy. Just don't be terribly surprised to hear that she's asked for you to drive her again.
Would you rather see her or be her? Yeah, I know, neither, me too. However, realizing how horrible it must be to live like that and have no choice about it is the beginning of compassion and being able to cope with them. Fortunately for you, you get to say no thanks.
(Bet Publix won't deliver to her because of her behavior)

(1,151 posts)She lives in my HOA and is a complete nightmare. She refuses to do even the barest minimum to be a considerate neighbor or decent human. No rules apply to her. She feels she and her family can behave however they wish, and whenever faced with even the smallest consequence, she screeches that they're being harassed and she's going to sue. Despite years of legit complaints against her from MANY different neighbors, nothing is ever her fault. I swear everything she says is straight out of the MAGA playbook. She's like a Facebook comment section in human form: no critical thinking skills, no logic, just childish insults, willful ignorance, deflection, lies, and made up grievances from twisting everyone's words around.
She actually likened being asked to follow a safety rule to "living in a concentration camp." I started calling her the Marjorie Taylor Greene of our HOA after that. I found out recently that she is a school counselor, which made my blood run cold. Those poor kids she supposedly counsels don't stand a chance.
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack, your story just brought up my PTSD when it comes to her.
