WPIXThe poll found Garcia, a former NYC Sanitation Department commissioner, leading the Democratic primary with 21% of votes. She was followed closely by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams a steady frontrunner in all three PIX11 polls who garnered 20% of votes from those surveyed.
Rounding out the top five were Andrew Yang at 16%; New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer at 10%; and former counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio Maya Wiley at 9%.
The only other candidate to poll above 5% was nonprofit executive Dianne Morales, who got 7%.
...snip...
When factoring in the citys new ranked choice voting system, Garcia maintained a narrow lead in all rounds of the latest poll except for round 6, when Adams won by 0.3%.
I'd say Morales' "Defund the Police" message isn't resonating...

(94,609 posts)But we need to get real about what its going to take to keep our communities safe and reform the NYPD. We need an experienced leader who is ready to work with the police union to get results. Kathryn is the only candidate that has the commitment and the experience to get it done. As the leader of a uniform agency with a 98% male force and law enforcement division, she was tough but fairand fired Sanitation Workers that broke the rules. This is the kind of accountability we need to achieve real reform.
Right now we are seeing many retirements in the upper ranks at NYPD. A new commissioner will have the opportunity to reshape the culture. Our incoming recruits will be more diverse. But we cant afford another day without action or accountability. Kathryns plan will drive down crime and restore trust in the NYPD.

(13,496 posts)I knew she could do it.... Hope it sticks.
(Shhh... don't tell anybody about the daily news article about her wanting to remove something like 25 percent of all NYC parking spaces for bike lanes....)
Universally people seem impressed with her. I do worry, tho, because she isn't a dynamic speaker/at ease on meet and greets.

Podcast host: As mayor would you carry a firearm on you even with a security detail?
Eric Adams: Yes I will, number one, and number two, I wont have a security detail. If the citys safe, the mayor shouldnt have a security detail with him. He should be walking the street by himself.
Adams went on to call out the hypocrasy of citywide offificials who say places of worship don't need armed security.
He implies that if they could travel with armed security then houses of worship should be defended too.

(312 posts)Read a compelling comment yesterday about how DSNY (the Sanitation department) as a city agency is there for just about _everything _. Garbage pickup? Check. Major weather event? Check. Protest/parades/public gatherings? Check.
Meaning, DSNY has tons of crossover with other city agencies and departments, and is well woven into the city fabric. The (successful) leader of such a department will be well acquainted with the functioning of the city, so moving onto mayor doesnt seem like a huge stretch.
Contrast with Andrew Yang, who probably doesnt realize that DSNY is a city agency and thinks theyre magical trash fairies. (I fully realize this is a hypothetical, but hes made similar comments that betray his ignorance of how things actually work)
