He'll find that out once she's through suing him for big bucks. Where the hell did he get the dumb ass idea that a checked in motel guest assumes ownership of a room and is responsible for a flooding toilet?

He's definitely the idiot in that video. And the nation now knows it as I'm sure he's doxxed by now.

I traveled over spring break with my friend and 5 kids total. We reserved two rooms for two nights. The first night after we had just gone to bed, the toilet started overflowing and the bathroom was flooding. The room phone didn’t have a front desk option so I ran down to the front desk at the adjacent hotel. The crown choice front desk wasn’t staffed. The man behind the counter asked me if turned the shut off valve off. I said no I’m coming to you for help. I didn’t want to do it wrong or wade through flooding water. He proceeded to get irate with me. He called the police and said he was charging me with malicious destruction of property. He verbally harassed me (which I have videos publicly posted on Facebook). He said we needed to pack our bags and leave, so at midnight two moms and five kids were left with nowhere else to go that is not owned by this same family. We tried Holiday Inn express but they were full - but the front desk employee desperately tried to accommodate us. We ended up driving south to Gaylord for the night.
The hotel itself is filthy and in disrepair. We wouldn’t allow our kids to walk in the room without shoes on.
Please do your research before staying/dining/shopping in Mackinaw City.

I had a similar type of thing happen - without the asshole owner - at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, North Carolina. My husband and I stayed a week. I had a seminar that ended the say of the eclipse in 2017. The second night we were there, the toilet started leaking when I went back to my room at lunchtime. Two days later it started leaking again. The day of the eclipse we were gone from 8:30 AM until after 9 at night, between spending the day with my husband's family watching the eclipse and the bumper to bumper traffic going back. The carpet in the room was soaked - they had found the gushing toilet when the water went under the door into the hallway. Their idea of compensation - a free breakfast. We hadn't eaten breakfast at the (bad) hotel restaurant all week. Our dirty clothes in the closet were soaked and since we were traveling for a few more days, we didn't want to carry wet, dirty clothes around in the car. They offered to wash them overnight - since I notified them I would NOT be staying the additional two nights we had reserved. Sure, they washed them, but they did not dry them, so we still carried wet stinky clothes home.

Don't ever stay at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, NC!

Oh - they couldn't change rooms since they were booked with eclipse visitors.

My sister and I have a story, but it’s about being turned away from someplace where we had a reservation. Their parking lot was not full, but we were told they had no rooms. Sis was exhausted from extensive driving and just about ready to blow a gasket, so I suggested she wait to one side while I talked to the man sweetly about calling around to find another place for us.

While waiting, we asked to use the restroom and were turned down. Two happy young couples came in, dressed up for an evening out, and were accommodated immediately. Seriously.

Hm. To my mind we looked like two respectable middle aged ladies dressed for travel: slacks or jeans, blouses, walking shoes, clean and neat, no biker tatts or anything off-putting. Most people look at us and can tell we are sisters, though Sis is 8” taller than I am.

Finally the proprietor gave me an address. When we were back in the car and heading down the pitch black highway, I asked what the hell just happened there? She said through gritted teeth: “He thought we were lesbians.” Shocked the shit out of me, but Sis is bi- so her youthful experiences were somewhat different than mine.

But the night was not yet over.

Far down the road it was obvious we’d passed the address we were given, so we turned into an industrial park, got lost in there, made it back to the highway.

Finally saw the hotel sign. Dark, broken. But at the end of a huge parking lot there was a building with lights on in the entry and cars clustered just there. We pulled in to the parking lot, slowly. It was dark, empty. We stopped not far from the road and watched, with the engine running: almost the only lights on were at the front door, people coming and going from their cars. After awhile I said: “Do you want to go up there?” “Oh HELL no,” said she and took off.

We had just enough energy left to briefly laugh like crazy and make up stories about what kind of business they were doing at that Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Place.

We stopped at the first gas station/convenience store we saw and parked in the brightly lit parking lot by the brightly lit store. From there, Sis called Trip Advisor and explained the situation, so she could make sure to stop payment to the hotel we were refused at. I took the phone at some point to tell the story of the Very Bad Place we were told to go to by that asshole, and the woman on the other end of the line was suitably appalled. She told us to sit tight, that she was going to find us a place to stay — and after quite awhile, she did.

It was probably 2:00 a.m. by the time we got there, and the proprietress was sweet and kind. The room was clean and comfy. Sis walked into the bedroom, shut the door, and crashed. I unfolded the couch, found the extra bedding, and did likewise.

We were okay. Someone had actively wished us ill — but we were okay.

I hope you left a nasty review on Trip Advisor.

We had a situation in Melbourne, Florida. I'd reserved a room for a week through AAA at a hotel. We were going out every day to birdwatch, so leaving very early in the morning, coming back at sunset, stopping by Walmart to burn our pics to CDR (first digital camera), eating dinner, the getting back to the room at about 9 PM, and crashing.

The third night, we got back to the room and our key wouldn't work. A guy opened the door and said he and his friend had checked in a couple of hours before. We go to the front desk and they said our reservation had run out and they had to clear the room. I actually had a printout of the reservation showing it was for a week. The manager had showed up, and didn't seem to understand why we were upset, even when I showed her the printout. They said they had no other rooms. I stood in the lobby getting more and more unpleasant. They finally "found" a room for us. But when they brought our things out, they'd thrown everything into garbage bags, the food we'd gotten to take with us for each day's bird watching was gone (about $30 worth of food), and they'd mixed clean and dirty clothes together.

The only saving grace was, when I got home, they had comped us the room for the rest of our stay and had forgotten to charge us for the first couple of nights, so we stayed free! I did complain to AAA and the next time I checked, that hotel had been taken off their list for Melbourne.

I just don't get how people who are supposed to be in the hospitality business think they can get away with being that unpleasant.

If that happened to me, my first instinct would be to call the front desk. If you check the BBB page, this is par for the course with this hotel.
