Senate GOP doubts grand jury charges would weaken Trump
By Alexander Bolton - 05/27/21 06:00 AM EDT
Senate Republicans see a special grand jury investigation into President Trump's business practices by Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. as more evidence that Democrats want to keep Trump in the spotlight to drag them down in the midterm election.
Republicans think the investigation will only further deepen partisan divisions over the former president and believe that even if he's indicted, it wont diminish him as a political force in 2022 and beyond.
GOP lawmakers say a lot depends on what Vance is able to prove in court if he brings a criminal case against Trump, his business associates or the Trump Organization itself.
But they say its too early to assess whether a criminal indictment against Trump or even a conviction will inflict any serious damage on Trumps popularity among Republican-leaning white working-class voters who are the core of his base.

Im not even sure a guilty verdict against Trump himself will diminish the adoration they have for Trump. Its a sickness.
Quite frankly, Im not convinced this thing even goes to trial. We couldnt get a guilty verdict in the Senate on 2 separate occasions. Im skeptical this guy ever faces justice. And if he skates a 3rd time, God help us all.

(17,553 posts)nothing that he would be charged or convicted of, that would negatively influence is base of followers. These are people who still deny the election results; they are not impressed the truth. The strongest possible evidence against Trump would be seen as proof that the Liberals were out to get him on another witch hunt. You can not apply logic to irrational people.
His base of around 35-40 percent of the voters will stand by him. We need to accept that, not spend a lot of time worrying about them, and just plan around them. The important group of people, who can be influenced, are the few in the center and they are the reason to aggressively investigate Trump and his party.
To be fair, there a a group of Liberals, myself included, that would not support Trump if he walked on the waters and raised the dead. That is probably 35-40 percent of the other side. It is the 20-30% in the gray areas that will be influenced by Trump's legal problems, that is why we push forward, aggressively, with investigations, followed by indictment's. We need to shine a light into the dark world of Trump and his supporters.

(32,778 posts)First 53% of under 24% is only about 1 in 8 voters. It's not hard to envision 1 in 8 as politically nuts.
Second, the overall numbers of the poll don't square with 4 other polls showing Biden's approval at 60% or higher.
It requires too high a fraction of independents to approve of Biden to square with historical results.
Third, 3% of dems think T***p is still POTUS? I think not. That just doesn't make sense given a nearly 8 million vote win & approval of at least 3 in 5 voters.
So, it's not really that big a number, and I question their results across the board.

(17,553 posts)And the same 43 percent that supported Trump, near the end. Those are the hard-core haters. It is also the same 40 something percent that still believe that the election was stolen. If you average out the polls they indicate that Biden's approval is around 54%. I know that you can find a poll that is much higher, but it will reflect a big difference in the rest of the polls. I have more faith in the 538 poll. (Today showing 54.2 approval and 40.4 disapproval) Don't get me wrong, a 14 point edge is a good thing and I am glad that the numbers aren't reversed....
The numbers of Trump worshippers is higher than you may want to believe. I know that it makes no sense, but it is what it is. There are a lot of angry, ignorant people in this country.

Won't make a bit of difference. That psychopathic mobster and his criminal enterprises will not be affected negatively, so long as the QOP continue to enable and support him. Oh, especially the media, and I mean all of the media, not just fox.

(17,553 posts)the rest is entitlement. However, the IRS and the Justice Department may not be as forgiving as the Republican leadership.
To prosecute a former president, the case will have to be iron-clad; and that is how it should be. Perhaps the evidence is there, and perhaps not, time will tell. I may be silly, but I still have faith in our system of justice, it is far from perfect, but it is better than everyone else's. To be perfectly clear, I would rejoice in seeing the whole Trump family hauled off in cuffs, but I ain't holding my breath.
