(14,855 posts)... and briefly looked at all of them, missing the reference to "d***" Button at the bottom of the Lake Placid description until I reopened the link from the OP.
Nearly all of the pics and descriptions seemed odd to me, in the sense that I had no desire to see them in the middle of nowhere.
I've visited Sedona, which was pretty, but it was probably the most boring part of my two-week trip to Arizona. Lots of artists there, which some people might prefer, but I'm more of a science geek interested in their Biosphere 2, Meteor Crater, solar power research facilities, the Lowell Observatory, the Sonora Desert Museum, the Grand Canyon, etc.

(3,427 posts)Why is it capitalized? Is it a trademarked phrase or proper noun? Not from what I can tell. And what's with the quotation marks? Were they quoting someone, or are they used as scare quotes?

I would like to clarify something, Mineral Man. I am not a poster of click bait or commercial spam. I have been a poster here since 2004. I realize that I am not as prolific of a poster as you are, but I would have thought that you might kind of recognize my name.
The point to the post was to take you directly to the third article, the one about Lake Placid. They referred to former Olympian Dick Button. But instead of writing out his name they referred to him as "d*** Button." Like his name was a profane word that had to be edited out.
That was what I was wondering if people would notice. The point was to engage people in a dialogue about how crazy we can get when guarding against the supposedly inappropriate.

(146,317 posts)If you post just a link, without some context regarding what someone might find there if they click through to the linked page, many, many people will not see what you're showing them. It's not really about the content at that link. It's about not helping people understand why they should click a link blindly to see if there's something actually interesting there.
I clicked your link, to see what sort of website you linked to. What I found were some stories and lots and lots of ads. It's a clickbait site that hopes people will post links on social media to get traffic to the site so the site can make some money for showing ads.
I've heard of Dick Button. It's amusing that they used asterisks to avoid the word, but that's just an algorithm on that site that watches for questionable language and does it stupidly, since "Dick" is a very common nickname. Again, that's what clickbait sites to. They grab content wherever they can find it and post it without any editorial review.
But, if you include some context about what is at the link in your OP, people can make a decision whether to click or not. Most DUers don't click on links like that unless there is some context.
