Republicans largely oppose forming a commission to examine the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, hoping to block out further Donald Trump-induced chaos while they try to retake Congress next year.
The former president is making clear he isnt going anywhere.
Trump is confiding in allies that he intends to run again in 2024 with one contingency: that he still has a good bill of health, according to two sources close to the former president. That means Trump is going to hang over the Republican Party despite its attempts to rebrand during his exile and its blockade of a Trump-centric investigation into Januarys insurrection.
And amid news that the Manhattan district attorney has convened a grand jury that could decide to indict Trump, other executives working for him or the business itself, Trump publicly signaled this week that hes considering another run. But he may face skepticism from surprising corners of the GOP, as some Republicans who supported him consistently during his presidency have mixed opinions about the possibility of a Trump 2024 campaign, according to interviews with 20 Republicans in both the House and Senate.

(11,738 posts)The prominent Republicans who have stepped forward have been brushed off. Romney is talking, but he's going nowhere. Cheney has had her power stripped. She will be around, but she is a woman who went against the head of the party. No one will back her.
Trump will not fade unless something is done about right wing media. He is a creation of media in general, but right wing media in particular. He won't fade until the reach of right wing propaganda is decreased significantly.

(11,738 posts)They all hitched their wagon to Trump because he fired up the racists. They do not however, want to be that closely associated with the racists and dregs that Trump energized. SO they want the energy he may have created, but they don't want the problems associated with the energy he created.
They would probably actually love for Democrats to take him out before 2024, legally. That way they could bemoan how horrible and partisan Democrats are, while secretly masturbating to the fact that he wouldn't be able to run in 2024 and take them all the way off the cliff.
