Police in Mississippi have sparked anger after four white officers with dogs posed for a photo with a captured Black suspect. The officers from Prentiss Police Department took the picture after arresting Eric Boykin for an alleged bank robbery.
Investigators say they captured Mr Boykin in a wooded area near the Hancock Bank, which he is accused of robbing with a handgun.
Social media users were quick to draw attention to the optics of the police departments photo.
This isnt evidence, its not proof of anyones injuries (or lack thereof). Its a trophy, tweeted @ariel_gordon.

(8,580 posts)One looks like a Beagle, the other looks like a Beagle, possibly mixed. The breed aren't trained for protection work. It just isn't in their breed characteristics. They sniff out drugs and contraband, and perform tracking duties. These two would track a person and when they found them (if the person was hiding) or when they were able to trap and surround them, what would they do?
They're Beagles...they'd stand in front of him baying up a storm and wagging their tails. And if he took off, they'd follow him some more, waving their tails and baying up a storm. Beagles aren't agressive biters or attack dogs, they're hunting dogs. The AKC describes the breed as "merry" "happy go lucky" and "easygoing" as well as a lot of similar adjectives. https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/beagle/ and it's accurate to all my interactions or knowledge of the breed.
Now, I'd believe those jeans were torn up by dogs if the dogs in the photo were GSD's or Belgian Malinois; I've owned GSD's all my life, and my current one is a quarter Malinois, and I know exactly what they're capable of. The guy would look a whole lot worse from that encounter I am sure. But Beagles? Other than the usual reasons (teething and puppyhood, to protect themselves or their family when provoked) you just don't see that level of agression.

(8,580 posts)I expected GSD's or Belgian Malinois; both traditional tracking and police work dogs. I was expecting to see a black man being terrorized by those breeds, something I find particularly upsetting because I've owned them my whole life, and they're wonderful dogs when not being trained and exploited by thugs with badges.
But I didn't expect Beagles, so that part was a relief.
The real outrage here is the photo and staging of the photo. A human being, treated like a hunting trophy. The black man, forced to pose with a smile (that looks more like a grimace, really) with the fluffy, good ol white boys from the po-lice. And their dogs that tracked that dangerous criminal down
...and kinda make them look silly because well, they're friendly happy Beagles not tough don't-fuck-with-me GSD's or Belgians. I discussed the Beagles in a different post upthread, so won't repeat that part.
I hope these jerks all get fired, but it is Mississippi...a state that exists solely so the rest of us in the south can say "we may have problems but we ain't Mississippi."
