I know nothing about it. Is it necessary for humanity? Do we not have enough communications and entertainment as it is?

And it's most effective at short range, which means more towers, and I expect it also also means it will be deployed less in rural areas.
But, hey, if we can put up chains of satellites that make the jobs of astronomers much more difficult, why not screw up weather prediction. Who cares about weather? Farmers, aviators? Who relies on those guys. pffft.

(43,049 posts)6. Remember when we went from 300 to 2400 baud?
Text moved so fast we couldn't read it coming in any more. Cool!
Didn't make what was coming in any more worthwhile though. And as speeds got faster and bandwidth wider, senders were filling every bit of unused space with whatever crap they had handy.
Can't imagine anything will change with 5G. Just more movies and ads. Bidness and researchers may get good use out of it, but why should we pay?
