We keep hearing that the Republican PTB are sticking with Trump because he's still wildly popular and adored by his 'base'.
And yet, one wonders why this 'base' isn't bitin' when it comes to Dear Leader's blog. After being denied the Great One's voice for so long, you'd think they would be flooding this new source of communication with his covfefe-craving minions.
And yet, they're not.
Is it possible that these fanatical devotees are not as fanatical, nor as devoted as the powers-that-be in the GOP have led themselves to believe?
Could it be that believing their own bullshit has led the Republican party to cater to the whims of a man whose 'base' ain't what it used to be - and never will be again?
The Republicans have not come to beat a dead horse - they're just trying to convince themselves that next election, the beating-a-dead-horse contingent will come out in droves to vote for them.

(11,270 posts)but IMO even seats that they think are safe are in big trouble. Democrats and Independents see through the bullshit and half republicans think they are nuts. Half of a 25% base calling them out is big trouble for pukes.

(21,466 posts)there is the fact that gerrymandered districts and voter suppression laws can give them an edge in the House. The problem is not Trump alone. The ideas and agenda that he promoted live on and the people who embrace them grow bolder. We might face a future clash with them before they are finally crushed.

I'm welcome to hearing how the Democrats get past the inevitable filibuster. They're obviously not getting past it with the January 6 investigation bill.
Sorry, but I'm all out of positive thoughts. I'm ready to accept the fact we're a Shit country.

(18,486 posts)But political winds shift, often because people make them change and then things happen that we thought never could occur.
That's the point of political engagement.
Thank God Thurgood Marshall and Charles Hamilton Houston didn't just say "Plessy v. Ferguson will never be overturned" and give up in 1950 when no one thought the Supreme Court would ever reverse solid precedent by ruling segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
I'm so glad that Dr. King and John Lewis and Clarence Mitchell and Dorothy Height didn't just sit down and complain that "We'll never get a Civil Rights Act or a Voting Rights Act passed in Congress" in 1960 when those seemed like impossible dreams.
And we're all better off that we didn't buy into the claims of those who said in 2007 that there was no way America would elect a Black president in 2008.
It's self-defeating to say something is impossible politically. It's only impossible of we believe the naysayers and don't work to change it.

(9,998 posts)He would have never reached the Supreme Court, because Turtle would have blocked him if nominated a year before the election.
We're dealing with a different animal, and completely different times now. That's just my opinion.
I'm in complete agreement on what is needed. I just don't think this country is capable of that. I get less hopeful about the future every day sadly. Even electing a wonderful man in Joe Biden didn't obviously change that.
I'll hope for the best, but fully expect, and would bet on, the worst.

(18,486 posts)First of all, McConnell is in no position to block a Supreme Court nomination - he doesn't control the process and the filibuster is no longer in effect for Supreme Court nominations.
Frankly, I'm sick of people today whining about how awful things are now and how much better they were 60 years ago than they are today. Go talk to a Black or Brown person who was active in politics and civil rights then and ask them if they think things were so much easier then than they are now. If you think it was easy peezy to get Thurgood Marshall confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967, you should go back and read some history about the years of preparation that went into making that happen.
But if you're committed to just whining about how the sky is falling and the country is a shithole with no hope of progress, perhaps you should just sit this out and let the rest of us do the work without having to be distracted with self-defeating naysaying some people here seem all-too-willing to engage in for no good purpose.

(25,939 posts)Cheeto Benito used his position to gather dirt on all & sundry from a variety of sources, ranging from US government intelligence agencies to pooty-poot's ratfuckers. How else to explain the oath of fealty that repuQs still recite to Dear Leader, which flies in the face of logic? They would turn down opportunities for campaign contributions while pledging allegiance to that bloated sack of shit? Gotta be a reason.

(144 posts)Trump-ism is racism and greed raging against changing demographic's . As long as there is a significant number of people who share this fear the Republican party will be their home. Trump is just the current standard bearer. There is always at least one politician who will use white resentment to gather power and mobilize the "deplorables". I think the base sees him as a loser and are looking for a stronger candidate to represent their hate and hate. My fear is that some articulate polished right-winger will appear and successfully tap into this base. Don't ever underestimate the power of racism and greed.

(2,571 posts)talking points are mostly fake, hired and or bot drive.
Back in January, the Qcrazies or the bots/paid were promoting the need to stock up and prepare for a disaster or something. I live in a red county, the shelves were left full even of the items most in demand, TP, the meat counters, and the canned and packaged foods that are ready to eat or cook and have a long shelf life.
Unlike the initial pandemic stripping of the shelves.
