Richard Blumenthal @SenBlumenthal 28mIf Republicans cravenly betray the bipartisan January 6th Commission bill, theyll leave us with only one option: a Select Committee to uncover the truth & protect against vile violent attacks on our democracy.

(9,998 posts)Don't bother telling me how we can point out that Democrats wanted to make it Bi-Partisan. The Pieces Of Shit on the other side don't care about Facts OR Reality.

(73,555 posts)I had told my son that a Select Committee was the way to go. Yesterday, we heard a Senator being interviewed say this was the option most likely to happen. Personally, I favor that option, because it generally translates into hearings being covered live. The great example was the Watergate hearings led by "an old country lawyer." One of the primary functions of Congress (both houses) is to educate the public on important issues. That is distinct, for example, from the 9/11 Commission's investigation up until it released its final report.

(73,555 posts)has been some outstanding media reporting on 1-6. And that has included making use of some of the thugs filming themselves rioting. Several have provided accurate timelines, thought it is difficult, at best, to cover all that needs to be documented in an hour-long program. As a result, when republicans in DC claim a range of lies -- from "it was antifa/BLM" to "peaceful tourists" -- those with a shallow level of understanding are at risk of believing them.
Open hearings, complete with film and witnesses testifying over days and weeks, allows for a more easily understood timeline. And it allows for a review of the plans being made weeks in advance of 1-6, and those plans were not limited to the KKK, Q-anon, and Proud Boy filth. I think it is important for people here to fully appreciate what old-timers like you and I know: the republicans fear that some of their members played a role that has only been hinted at with mention of their "giving tours" to the thugs in the days leading to 1-6. But that coordination was not limited to tours. And the republican "leadership" knows that.

Would a select committee have subpoena power?
It would have subpoena power.
