The U.S. Postal Service said it will raise rates on postage for letters, postcards and other mail services this summer as part of Postmaster Louis DeJoy's 10-year plan to overhaul the agency's flailing finances. The cost of a stamp for first-class mail will increase to 58 cents from its current 55 cents.
DeJoy, whose tenure has been marked by controversy over his operational changes at the service, earlier this year unveiled a 10-year plan to overhaul the USPS. He said the changes are necessary to stanch billions of dollars in losses and put the agency on the path to profitability and on Friday he said raising postage rates are part of the effort to boost revenue.
Single-piece first-class mail volume, such as letters that have postages stamps, has declined 47% during the past 10 years, the USPS said Friday. Even with the latest increase, the USPS said it will continue to have "some of the lowest letter-mail postage rates in the industrialized world" when they go into effect on August 29.

(37,160 posts)If that's the case, instead of just bumping up the price of buying new ones, how would it affect old ones?

(37,160 posts)Ever since Forever stamps became the standard, all a price increase meant was that new ones cast the new price. You could still use the ones you'd bought at the old price. That was the whole point of having them.
Unless you've seen something that says that they're changing that, then the odds are pretty strong it'll be handled as it was in the past.

(12,445 posts)You can hand a letter to a counter agent in San Diego and it will be placed in your mailbox, by hand in Bangor, Maine for $0.58... that's 2700 miles.

(5,557 posts)The current methods and technology used by the postal service seem inadequate for the volume they now receive.
I'd love to see tracking eventually for every single letter.

(11,470 posts)A dollar a stamp to have it go back to how it used to be.
Businesses that buy a lot could get a discount.

(12,445 posts)Think about it.
They're moving a one ounce parcel from Seattle Wa to Miami Fl for $0.58
That's dirt cheap. Frankly it should be $1 for a 1st class stamp.
Not defending DeJoy of course... but I bet the USPS Board agrees with this...

(16,234 posts)This guy destroyed or removed 4,926 mail-sorting machines. Some due to upgraded machines..some just destroyed or removed by his sabotaging. Time to fire/remove him. Numbers from The Hill on September 9, 2020. Anyone know the current count? In all fairness to the postal system.. I agree. A first class mail from coast to coast for 58 cents is more than reasonable...my beef is his destruction of property n his timing doing so.

(36,745 posts)That means tons of valid old stamps are available at a discount. My effective postage rate is about 33 cents presently since I use the old stamps for what few letters I send now.
Saves money and makes for colorful envelopes.

(7,410 posts)The USPS has to reinvent itself as a parcel delivery service if its going to survive. There really is no reason to have paper mail anymore with the technology we have, its a waste of natural resources and fuel these days.

And what about junk mail? Thats where most mail these days is from.

(36,745 posts)People still use it to send cards, checks, etc, etc to one another. It will simply shrink in volume and get more expensive.
