Joe Biden Is 'Giving Serious Consideration' to Nominating Caroline Kennedy for Ambassadorship

Caroline Kennedy is being considered for a top ambassador role within President Joe Biden's administration, according to the Associated Press.

The White House declined to comment but, citing a source, the AP reported Thursday that Biden, 78, is "giving serious consideration to nominating" Kennedy, the daughter of late President John F. Kennedy, to an ambassadorship somewhere in Asia.

She previously served as the U.S. ambassador to Japan under President Barack Obama from 2013 until he left office in 2017.

Kennedy, 63, is one of the most prominent members of her famed political family.

Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been offered the role of ambassador to Japan. NBC News first reported in February that Biden was considering Emanuel, a chief of staff in the Obama White House.


Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has been offered the ambassadorship in India, the officials said. Garcetti, a Democrat, has been mayor since 2013.

And former Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns has been offered the job as Biden's envoy to China. Burns, a longtime diplomat who has served under presidents of both parties, has been the U.S. ambassador to NATO and to Greece, as well as the State Department's spokesman."...(more)
