in deferred payroll taxes, which they thought would be forgivenSome staffers from President Donald Trump's administration have reportedly seen their tax bills spike as they're being asked to pay payroll taxes deferred by the president.
Politico reported that members of Trump's administration have reportedly been receiving letters asking them to pay Social Security taxes that were deferred, with at least one bill reaching $1,500.
"If the indebtedness is not paid in full within 30 calendar days, we intend to forward this debt to the Department of Treasury, Treasury Offset Program, for further collection," said a copy of a letter sent May 18, 2021, by an accounting officer from the Office of Administration.
Trump set the policy on August 8, 2020, in a memo to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, directing Mnuchin to defer some payroll taxes to "put money directly in the pockets of American workers" who needed it most.

(5,913 posts)The deferral didn't apply to them. I'm a senior rank-and-filer and I know it didn't apply to me. I was glad about it too.
I think for us the cutoff was $4000 a pay period. So I'm not sure who these officials were, but yeah, Uncle wants his money back.

(32,680 posts)I'm retired now, but I've worked for most of my life at many different companies. None of the companies I worked for decided what my withholding amount would be.
I was always asked to fill the form (I think it's called W-4) in which the employee says how many dependents, other withholding, etc. It must be signed and dated by the employee, and that's used to calculate each person's paycheck.
However Chump managed to work around this for certain employees, it had to be illegal.

(21,377 posts)I am also retired but we could still have SS make deductions to our payments, which I did. I also made deductions to my pension.
I found it amazing that the freedumb party allowed MF45 to withhold those W-4's. I think he promised them the taxes would be forgiven.

(16,455 posts)We all know how good Chump is at making "promises." The problem is that to him, "promise" means "say whatever you feel like saying, then forget about it as soon as the words leave your mouth." Easy to do when you have no conscience whatsoever.

(34,082 posts)authorizing employers to stop withholding certain Social Security payments through the end of the year in order to make people feel as if they had more pocket change.
If you didn't get hit with repayment of the deferred SS tax collection, then your employer has a brain or two.
The taxes still had to be paid - they would just be deducted during the first few months of this year (making your paycheck smaller because Biden won). But if you're no longer employeed, the employer can't make the make-up deductions.
He expected to be elected president and then turn the delay into a permanent waiver - so he didn't get hit with the blame he schemed to heap on Biden.
It was the employer's decision to follow Trump's advice - and I don't think many did. I predicted at the time it would be a disaster.
Here's an article that helps explain it:

(34,082 posts)It was an executive order - but it applis to ALL employers (with a few exceptions) to defer collecting SS taxes for the remainder of 2020 - and to shift the tax bill to 2021.
Most employers were smart enough to not want the hassle in 2021, when they had to take double wthholdings. But some/much of the feds went along with it.

As many as 1.3 million federal workers may have had some of their payroll taxes deferred under the measure, as Insider reported in September. Under the plan, earners paid less than $4,000 every two weeks wouldn't have to pay the 6.2% tax out of their paychecks from September through the end of the year.
Employees should see their deferred taxes in the withholdings from their pay. They can check with their organization's payroll office for details on the collection schedule.

This disaster-in-the-making was discussed quite a bit at the time. What distured me was suggesting those impacted by it were to blame because they chose to work for Trump, when this disaster was imposed on many innocent people whose employers chose to follow the executive order - many who hate Trump as much as you do. They were simply caught in a political maneuver, and had no choice in the matter.

(34,082 posts)As someone who did taxes for relatively low-income people (who were often hit out of the blue with taxes they didn't expect), I was having sympathy pangs for tax preparers this year.
But I think most employers decided it wasn't worth the hassle to shift withholding from last year to this year.
The only two differences for these folks - their employer was under Trump' thumb, and they lost their jobs so the extra money couldn't be withheld this year to make up the shortfall.

(3,697 posts)Odd that this story highlights Trump hires. All Federal workers making less than $8000 a month had their portion of SS taxes withheld. Folks were told they would have to make up the deferred amounts in 2021. The folks getting demand letters probably are not working since the additional SS tax was to be taken from 2021 pay checks. Oh well, they'll have to use the Dems' $1400 additional stimulus money to cover the outstanding tax debt.
