Texas, guns and silencers, coming to a state near you soon....

Texas is on the verge of telling the BATFE to kiss their ass.

For many years gun suppressors (silencers) have been heavily regulated and taxed by the Federal Government. Texas is taking the position that if the silencers are made in Texas and stay within the State that they are none of the Fed's business. The legislation is planned to be a model for other states to allow their citizens to use silencers without government regulation. It will be really interesting to see how the Feds handle the issue.

Well, that should be no problem since the Texas border is heavily fortified and trade across it is vigorously regulated.

I believe also open carry. I don't know how factual the westerns are but they had to check their guns in in places like Tombstone . Now we can open carry and use silencers like Al Capone gangsters now.

They are still permitted by the Federal Government after and extensive background check and after paying the $200.00 tax to the Feds.
If you sell or trade it, the new owner would have to go through the same process. Texas wants them unregulated.

you don't hear a soft plop like in the movies, all they do is lessen the noise, they are still quite noisy.

European countries, like France, require suppressors for hunting to reduce the decibels on the ears and nearby buildings.

I suspect though that the BATFE will have something to say about this.

Gun, caliber, ammo velocity, the ambient temperature and the quality of the device. I have seen one used on a .22 rifle that made it as quite as an air rifle. The noise of the action cycling was louder than the report.

Are actually quite loud, their real intent is to save your ears...You cannot shoot a gun with a suppressor on it and have no one hear it... and are really useless on a revolver..

...the PMR-30 .22 pistol with a suppressor and subsonic .22 ammo is pretty quiet. So I guess that is as close as it gets to the movies. I don’t think that subsonic .22 ammo has any special requirements to get; but I could be wrong.

It's a health and noise pollution issue. In Europe, many places encourage or require their use at ranges to reduce noise pollution and help prevent hearing damage to the shooter and others. They are not what Hollywood would have you think they are. There is a lot of myth and urban legend built up around the issue.

And a federal judge ruled that Trump could not withhold federal funding to California for refusing to enforce federal immigration law. So between the two, it would be hard to fight this with blue states doing it for marijuana and a precedent set for not allowing funds to be withheld from a state for not enforcing a law they don’t like.

Expect more of this from more red states with their reasoning being “you do it for your issues”.

...the DEA more or less is tuning a blind eye to the weed legal states. Now even a Republican controlled BATFE might not look well at ignoring title 2, National Firearms Act weapon procedures (I think they would for semi-autos being added to it).

A Democrat-controlled BATFE might not stand back like the DEA is doing; which would cause an interesting situation with one side arguing “hey show me the rule you are using to allow you to ignore federal laws but not us.” Also, I live in deep red Missouri. It isn’t just the state ignoring a potential AWB, it is that local police departments won’t either. They won’t turn in people for ignoring a ban when they hunt and shoot with those same people and have those guns at their home as well.

That would make the BATFE’s job a lot harder to enforce across all the red states. I do think the Republicans are going too far with trying to ignore silencer rules. I guess we will see where this goes. If they try to ignore the 1986 ban on new full auto weapons, that would certainly cause the BATFE to come out swinging.

My friend has been buying this stuff for decades with no hassles whatsoever.

but if this is true, then why haven't you notified the BATFE?

This makes you just as guilty as your friend and the firearms dealer.

They're pretty good at catching firearms dealers that are selling banned modifications.

He could do serious time in a Federal Prison and a hefty fine, as would the dealer.

I think your friend is pulling your leg.

$200 for the tax stamp and a few months waiting on your paperwork to clear the ATF (and it will unless you've got a criminal record) and you're good to go. Another $300-$500 for the suppressor, as long as your rifle's barrel is threaded to accept one.

And while a rimfire suppressor can indeed be had for under $500, those made for centerfire rifles can easily cost $1,000 or more.

Whereas Form 3's are taking some time due to greater demand.

And yeah, I have only looked at rimfire suppressors so that's where I got my price range from. Still too high for what's essentially a metal can with washers inside.
