TX mom charged after shooting her 5-year-old son while trying to shoot a dog

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A mother has been charged after accidentally shooting her 5-year-old son while trying to shoot a dog that was running across the street in north Houston, according to Houston police.

According to neighbors, Vargas, her son, and another family member were riding bikes down the street when a dog ran out. That dog, named Bruno, is a 6-month-old boxer puppy. Bruno's owner did not want to appear on camera, but told us what happened.

In Ring doorbell video obtained by ABC13, you can see Bruno running out with the owner following immediately behind. The owner can be seen telling the dog to come back in the house. The dog roams out onto the street, and less than a second later, multiple shots rang out. Gunshots were then followed by extended screaming by the little boy's parents.

From the video, you can tell only a few seconds elapsed from the dog running out to gunfire. Bruno was grazed on one leg, but otherwise fine. Bruno's owner was given a Class C misdemeanor citation for having a loose dog.

With deadly conduct with a firearm. I doubt that’s a misdemeanor. The dog owner was charged with a misdemeanor for having a loose dog.
Agree with your assessment of the shooter. Crazy.

For having a loose dog.

The mom is getting worse charges. The firearm add on makes it a 3rd degree felony.

Someone's dog is loose for a few seconds and you grab a gun and start shooting at it? WTF? Someone shoots my dog and they are going to have a big problem with me.

Glad the child is OK, hopefully they get removed from that dangerous home.

Someone with such poor judgment and a hair-trigger temper has no business being anywhere near a gun.

I am glad the dog wasn't harmed. Poor pup!

Provide all able dogs with a gun collar that fires one shot each time it barks and in the direction of what the dog is looking at. Shouldn't an animal be allowed to stand its ground?.........

......

Is there a law in Texas that penalizes dangerous abuse of the human title "Mother"?

Say what you will about Michael Moore, the culture of fear is a huge problem (as he highlighted in "Bowling for Columbine" ) .

It seems the attitude is that if you don't arm yourself you'll be a victim. The RW media feeds it, for sure.

What kind of f'ed up neighborhood is that?

Seriously, who would want to live there?

Will we see a migration out of Texas due to these open carry gun laws? Or will all the wild west fanatics from other states move there so they can live out their fantasy of shooting whatever bothers them?

Mainly residential areas, so there were always a few dogs that would get loose trying to protect their property. Some owners have a bad habit of just letting dogs out in the backyard to do the morning business, and not all back fences will keeps large, bored dog in.

Vinegar is much more effective as a long-term training device. And Mom was a good shot. No dog would charge her more than about three times.

When bicycles were a new rage, a class of small pistol was developed specifically for bicycle riders to ward off dogs when riding on country lanes and such. These remained in the usual stock of stores selling bicycles into the early years of the twentieth century.

gun manufacturers found a new market for shooting dogs when the world lived in fear of contracting rabies.

On July 6, 1885, a 9 year old boy named Joseph Meister was mauled by a rabid dog. A local doctor treated the wounds and told the family that the only person who could save Joseph was Louis Pasteur. After much pleading, Pasteur agreed only after consulting with a couple of real doctors who said Joseph was a "dead boy walking". Joseph received 13 inoculations in 11 days and made a complete recovery. The word leaked out and patients came streaming in the world over. At the time of Pasteur's death 9 years later, over 20,000 people had been given his post-exposure prophylactic vaccine.

The area of Houston where this woman was biking with her child is not a "country lane". Dogs are usually vaccinated for rabies these days, but who the hell knows in Texas? Still, I'd wager she wasn't carrying the gun because she feared encountering a rabid dog. Instead, she became just another statistic regarding a gun owner who ends up shooting herself or someone she knows, accidentally. Right.

There is pretty much zero need to carry a piece around nowadays, and people who feel they need to are not right in the head.

Just one of those 'history doesn't repeat but it rhymes' things that amuse me.

First, who the fuck needs to take their gun on a neighborhood bike ride (in, I would assume, suburbia)?

That having been said, what nutcase just randomly decides that a neighborhood puppy is a good thing to shoot at (dick move)...

Lastly, how do you miss your intended target SO BADLY that you shoot YOUR OWN KID?

Sadly,... that's what the world calls a war zone.

We already have enough of them outside of our borders.

Can the rest of us just give Texas back to Mexico?

And finally, why would ANY COMPANY choose to have a presence in Texas?
