Texas Republican calls proposal to limit Sunday voting a typo

One of the top Republican negotiators behind a failed Texas voting bill said it would have mistakenly limited early voting on Sundays, when many Black voters typically turn out.

“Call it a mistake if you want to, but what should have been 11 was actually printed up as 1,” state Rep. Travis Clardy said in an interview with NPR, adding that he plans to fix the error before it is voted on again.

Under current law, voting hours on the last Sunday before an election are decided by local officials. But in the final version of Senate Bill 7, unveiled this weekend, voting would have had to start after 1 p.m.

Democrats and voting rights advocates said the move was directly aimed at Souls to the Polls, a campaign to encourage Black voters to go vote as a group after church.

Republicans have not previously claimed that the addition was a typo. The provision was inserted into the bill in the final days of drafting and without input from Democrats or public testimony.

Apparently there were quite a few things in that bill Rep. Clardy admitted would have to be revisited due to being a "late addition", vagueness or "typos" in the final submission.
Especially since all those poor, low population rural districts just don't have the funding to run fancy elections like the big urban centers.
Why, it's just unfair to make elections such a burden on hard-working rural folks like the ones he represents.
